Easy. It was the only bit of personal data. So he email or PMs someone. Tells him about his last party with a bunch of guys from Ajarn and says he closed the place with the X Y an Z. Then the shyster gets online gives that info to us. It would have been much better if someone said. Hey we hear you but tell me (a fact Know to just the two parties or few parties. Like what is my dogs name. Remember when we took the bike trip at Christmas. What was the name of the town we stayed at first. ETC. So instead of the shyster providing information that he gleened from the email or PM, he has to come up with new data. (No of course that data should not be anywhere on Ajarn.com as the site is searchable.
So it is not really that difficult. It appears difficult but that is because we do not know the contents of the laptop or the keystrokes that were used proir to the laptop theft. ( IF indeed this is what occured.) Or registered by the keylogger software.
Sorry, no torture needed. Just a keylogger or open Firefox windows and a click the restore previous sesson bot or the automatic reopening of the computer with all the pages using the back and forward keys.
So in this scenerio he goes to the internet shop. Writes a couple of emails. Then logs on to ajarn. After 30 minutes or an hour. The 8 quarters he dropped in the machine run out. The screen goes black. He gets up and leaves the cafe. Someone goes over to the computer, drop in 50 cents (or is the shop flunky manager) and he gleens all this info. Hey $250 doable from friends. At least it was done on the open forum so that only one person pays.
It could have been more lucrative if he had gone to the friends feature, and sent personal PMs the the people listed as "friends". Why make the initial public appeal. If really necessary. Contact the people in the friends list. You can PM 10 separate users by separating with commas. So don't use the excuse that he would have to retype. He could have also made a notepad file and copy and paste it. So not much extra work. And the targeted audience would have probably been just as responsive if not more so.
That said. Let this be a lesson to all of us. There are ways to "help" in a situation that does not create more victims. Like "email me a scan of the police report or hospital bill."
Name of police station where you are at. Then call back. (This is another technique that is very helpful.) It puts the burden on them of giving you ways to verify information. Instead of relying on your friend to give you the number of the desk sargent. Look it up. You have the computer in front of you already. Yellow pages are online.
