Yup. I guess some folks forgot that they're dealing with the US gov, so you can't smile and "mai pen rai" past basic requirements.

I found the whole processing experience very civil, but I couldn't help but chuckle a couple of times at the asian/Thai applicants who tried the old que-jumping routine. Booming voice from behind the window counter: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" "WHY ARE YOU HERE?"

Welcome to America, sugars. I'll never get used to que jumping (), and it was glorious to see some locals get the smack down, American in-your-face stylee.

Fine with me, but I don't know - perhaps in the past they were less sort of 'personalized'.
Ouch. It was an easy enough but rather $$$ process, and I wouldn't want to do it every year. Perhaps you said too much? Always best to keep quiet and reveal only necessary info IMO.

My GF got the 10 year, open-ended tourist visa. We were very pleased with that.

Actually, the Visa does not guarantee you entry into the states. You still have the Immigration/Customs officer to deal with when you arrive - they are the last hoop, and have the final say-so on whether or not a person can enter, and determining length of stay.
