Re: Games for large unruly classes
Another variation of the word chain game that I sometimes use goes like this.
Divide your class into teams. I usually use 4 teams as I have 40-50 students in each class. Have the students form lines with their teams. The first student in line on each team goes to the board and writes one word. The next students in line run to the board and write a word starting with the last letter of the word the student before them wrote. Iach team has to write as many words as they can in the alloted time. Each student has to take their turn at the blackboard then return to the end of the line. The team with the most correct words is the winner.
This can can still get unruly if you do not stay on top of the action but the students have a lot of fun and everyone gets a chance to play and is involved.
Here is another game I use at the end of a lesson if the students have behaved. I call it the scrambled Sentence Game. I divide the class into 2 or 3 teams. I then take one of the sentences from the days lesson or even from a previous lesson and write it on the board, scrambling the order of the words. Each team sends a student to the blackboard. I give them a few moments to look it over before I say go. The first team to correctly rewrite the sentence is the winner and gets one point. Lots of fun to play. It is sometimes very funny to see what sentence the students come up with. I correct any mistakes that are made with the class.
Games are fun to use but for me and my students they have to be able to learn something from them. I teach prathom 4,5,and 6 so I like to try and make them think a little bit about what they are doing as opposed to playing a game like Stop or bingo.
