It's a simple situation, really.

If you want to sell lots of Macs you need to let PC companies like Dell and Acer to build them, and the OS should work on all various configuations of motherboards, processors and video cards.

If you insist on one company doing both the hardware and the OS and keeping it incompatible with the rest of the world, your share of the market will never increase beyond 5%, maybe 10%, even 15%. It will always remain a niche product.

I suspect Billy Gates doesn't worry too much about pirated Windows - that's how he got his 95% share, so what if only 80% of them pay? It's still far more than Stevie will ever dream of.

That was a clever move - hook them on for free, eventually they will pay when they buy notebooks, or their bosses will buy them genuine office machines. Windows will be everywhere and it will rule the world.
