I’m planning on going to Laos, partly to extend my VISA. Planning to travel through Laos (and possibly Vietnam), then come out in Northern Thailand. Looking for good tips.

First, I was wondering if I can buy a calling card or something that I can use with my Thai cell phone in Laos. When I was in Cambodia, I made a call and it cost me pretty. So, now I’m trying to figure out how to use my mobile in countries other than Thailand.

Also wondering about best routes into Laos, and possibly from Laos into Vietnam (Not so interested in HCMC, as it sounds a bit hectic. More likely interested in Hanoi or someplace like Da Nang). To Vientienne, read I can take a plane to Nong Kai for $35 then for another 100b take a bus to Vientienne. But three may be some good stuff in more Southern Laos.

Should I do the VISA stuff here, or at their borders? In Cambodia I did it at the border.

Yeah, I just read through a bunch of the Lonely Planet SE Asia in a bookstore this afternoon. Didn’t buy it ‘cause it was 1,125b. Wanna’ see if I can find it cheaper.
