Bacco, Osteria de Sergio...
...on Sukhumvit 53 about 200m in on the left (an easy walk from the Thong Lo bts). This is the new, more up-market effort by the owner of Basilico on soi 33. Judging by the menu prices,I would guess he's aiming at the market space now occupied by Zanotti's and Opera. SD and I were given a tour of the new restaurant: spacious, airy and with the promise of light entertainment after 10 pm for those who want to linger with another glass of wine. That sounds like a very good idea.
SD started with an eggplant lasagna. This could easily have been an entree due to its richness. Heavy on flavorful cheese and eggplant and very light on sauce, it went very well with a glass of Centine Banfi Toscana, a cab-sauv merlot blend that is excellent, though pricey (B350 a glass). I had the light and tasty tuna tartare served with thin slices of toast...and a mayonnaise sauce (drizzled around it) that was totally unnecessary.
We moved on to try their pizza: mozzarella di bufala, pesto and grilled shrimp. It was an interesting combination of pizza toppings that worked very well together. Those familiar with Basilico's pizza will recognize the same high quality work here. The base was perfect, not sodden or overloaded with toppings, but thin with a slight crispness.
I predict we will be regulars here just as we are at Basilico and for that reason I'll be adding to this thread as we try more menu items. This place is worth a visit.
Check-bin: B1900 (including 3 glasses of wine, one mentioned above and two more at B250 each) for a great lunch with excellent service.
