Bet, how did you get VLC to show unicode subtitles? I tried on three computers with no success.
VobSub thing works, though. You get it with K-light codec pack, open video in any player but VLC and there will be a big green arrow in the task bar. Language settings on the first screen. In case you get FFDshow filter instead of VobSub, just scroll down to "subtitles" and fix it from there.
No need for WinAvi unless you want to burn your movie+subs on VCD.
