Re: Oh My Tomcat!
While preparing dips for my very exclusive Christmas Eve cocktail, I started reminiscing about my mother doing the very same thing in the 50s...albeit on an emergency basis. My father had business associates who would think nothing of dropping in, families in tow and without calling first, on a Sunday afternoon. My mother, who would have agreed with Brie of Desperate Housewives that home management is both an art and a skill, would race to the kitchen to whip up some easy dips for all to enjoy with their drinks. Some of you may remember these:
1. add one packet of Lipton's Onion Soup (dried) to an 8 oz container of sour cream. Stir and serve with chips.
2. mix 8 oz of cream cheese with 6 oz of sour cream. Add a tblsp of lemon juice, a teaspoon of horseradish, 2 tblspns of grated onion and 8 oz of chopped smoked salmon (my mother used flaked canned salmon...nasty stuff). Chop up a quarter cup of pecans (walnuts will do) and add to the mix. Finish with a covering of chopped parsley. Serve at room temp.
