I got stopped by customs at Heathrow, London, coming off the Bangkok flight in 1984. They swabbed the inside of my passport with cotton wool dipped in clear liquid and it turned pink, and they accused me of possessing marijuana
They then searched my hand luggage, cut up my bar of soap, emptied my China tea all over the desk, etc, but didn't find anything and let me go without searching my rucksack. Bizarre
Had a similar experience on the coach back from the 'Dam on the French border. They searched my bag - found nothing - and then for good measure decided to slice it open with a stanley knife. They then slung it at me and told me to get back on the coach.

Yet another example of the fine relationship which exists between ourselves and the French.

They say the country lives in peace. We have three neighbours: Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. We use their resources, all three of them. If we have this great relationship, why should we pick on them?....They (the leaders) found new gas resources. I negotiated with them so we can sign contracts."
