I'm not a teacher but this is the sort of misunderstanding that occurs all the time all over the world.

You are not in the wrong. Anyone would have done the same thing. Would be worthwhile to get clarification of these things in future, if there is any question at all in your mind.

As for the incident, just let it pass, sounds like a one time thing?
