Re: Games

2 Minute Words

Teacher will prepare 5 sheets of paper for 5 teams simply by writing Team A on the top of each of 5 sheets of paper, Team B, Team C, etc.

Divide the class into 5 teams of 5 to 6 students, i.e. teams A through E. Try to spread the teams out around the classroom if possible. Only the team member that writes needs to sit, the others can stand around him/her. Give each team their first sheet of paper (minimize the risk of confusion).

When the game is being played, 4 or 5 students will speak words and 1 student will write them down. Explain to the students that each person in their team must have a turn at writing the words.

The teacher will say one of the below-listed categories and students have 2 minutes to think of and write down as many words as possible for that category. Spelling is not important as long as the teacher can understand the word, i.e. ‘french fried’ is obviously ‘french fries’, but ‘stick’ may not be accepted as ‘steak’; it’s up to the teacher.

The teacher will call out ‘Start’ and ‘Stop’. After the teacher has called out ‘Stop’, the writing team member has to run to the teacher and hand-in their team’s sheet. The last team to hand in their sheet loses 2 points! (as an incentive to stop writing immediately the teacher calls out ‘Stop’.

After each round, the teacher will read out the word list of each team and write their score on the board. Optionally, the teacher can discuss (joke about) any incorrect spelling and strange words. Teacher will then give each team their second (and so on) sheet of paper.
