I recommend the software ConvertXtoDVD, have you tried that one? You can render the subtitles I believe.

Also, does your DVD player have a subtitles button? Dumb question, but it took me a while to figure out that on my own!

I can't imagine they'd make a DVD player that wouldn't recognize some form of subtitles file. If yours doesn't recognize .srt, maybe you could convert the files to another format and include them in your next burn.
