Gonna go with KK on this one. Whats the point of pulling this thead up. Can you give us some examples rather than just your theory.

By the way my wife makes 8 grand US a month how do you figure that in the plans? Now I admit she has 4 grand a month in overhead for offices and secretaries. We plan on building apartments on the land we just finished paying for. Give me your theory on why I should not do this.

Your whole theory is based on nothing at all.

Aww, i don't mind mate. I remember wondering why this thread didn't go further.

Whenever my first wife (who took my name) and I wanted to look into buying or investing in something major, (after the initial negotiations) and the Thai side saw her foreign (family) name on paper,...the original price mysteriously went up!!

IE; Thais are expert at spotting that cracker name.

We regretted (more than once) having changed it as it's not necessary, yet could not be changed back (at least at the time).

Re: starting a biz?

My wife kept her maiden name. Its the only way to go. But when we married she would have suffered huge penalties if she had taken my last name. Kids have my name and thats fine with me.

^ Gotcha mate...I see where you're coming from!

And yeah I reckon Thais would be quite good at spotting a non-Thai name Jimbo Iamnotthai!!!

See "American Chamber of Commerce" for details. I'm not making this up! Sure you can find a shining example of someone who made it big, but for every one of those, there are 5 people who lost it all and went bust.

As for apartments.... are they over-priced condo-tel rooms with names like "The Room"? Are you targeting expats who will pay $1000/month? If so, there are thousands of buildings in Bangkok with overpriced rooms sitting mostly empty. Just drive down Rammkhamhaeng and you can see dilapidated buildings in decay, half-finished constructions, skeletons of buildings where street-trash lays ruin.

Your wife probably made a good run of the housing bubble and will soon find a bare market where nobody can afford the units on offer. Tuck that money away and get out while you have the chance.

Or I could just be overly-cynical and everything will work out fine... I'm just saying punch it into a spreadsheet and do the math before you invest. Remember the Gem scam... lol

Re: starting a biz?

Don't you need 6 directors in a limited company here? i.e. you can't put a business in only your wife's name...unless you aren't forming a limited co. of course.

I would have thought doing it after a marriage would have been the way to go anyway, as wealth amassed during a marriage is usually split 50/50 whereas wealth earnt before is not.

I opened a ski store two years ago in Rayong and the place is packed with eager buyers daily. Even open on Sunday now. Man, Thais love to ski!!

owning anything of value in thailand is either impossible or an investment that you might wanna consider down the drain as soon as it's 'yours'.
