starting a biz?
thinking of starting a biz with my 100% loyal and trustworthy thai fiancee.
any insight on ins and outs on where to start?
i want to have it in her name, while i plan and finance.
is there any Thai regulations that will undermine this?
thanks for your time!

Re: starting a biz?
You might get more insight from experienced posters if you were to post what kind of biz you want to open.
Different businesses require different types of licensing.

C'mon contender,...we won't tell anyone about your "beer bar."
Whatever biz it will be, it doesn't matter whether she starts it before or after your wedding, since it will be in her name anyways. If after, DON"T opt to change her name to your family name. That is one way to up the costs quickly! I hope this isn't a windup. What's the big secret?
travel agency
whore bar
internet cafe
english institute
t-shirt shop
massage place
guesthouse
restaurant

thanks jimbo. the one thing i was thinking of was that the non imm O requires a combined income of 40k baht/ month. so if the biz is in her name before our marriage, then that would count as her biz, thus her income. not from me. but maybe that has nothing to do with anything and wouldnt even matter?
oh, i didnt think anyone really cared what i was plannin on opening up. but i was thinking about cafe w/ brick oven pizza. mmmmm... pizza...

Re: starting a biz?
Start after you get hitched and retain all proof of your finacing. If you get divorced and can prove your money, you will have a better chance at getting the dough back .

its gotta be in her name any way, u cant own it, but there are few regulations depending on where ya wanna do it and what it is, the mafia nd often the police have a say in what goes up, thats for major towns, for smaller ones usually its just the "pu yai", or the big man of the village who will expect a cut, u should be more worried bout people paying,

Re: starting a biz?
^ those funny laws are gone. Before, A thai married to a farang couldn't own land (females), but they changed it. You can own a business at least partially, but you need some Thais involved (usually just namesake). You can't own land, but businesses can still lease it if ya got the funds last I checked.

Re: starting a biz?
For some strange reason, despite "record growth", "record tourism", and unprecedented opportunities for American businesses, not many people from America are investing here. They're actually pulling out...
Picture this:
You invest $20,000 in a business. Say a "beer bar" or t-shirt company. You buy a $1500 motorbike to get around. Then you buy some land and a house for $50,000. You furnish it and get everything just the way you like it. After airfare, fees, bills, etc, you've invested $100,000. Don't forget the car too... All of this you put in your wife's name.
The business starts slowly pulling in $1000/month profit but you have to work 7 days a week. Your gross return would be 12% and that's not accounting for taxes and living expenses(visas). After 2 years, your wife decides to cut and run but everything is in her name... Eventually she gives you the motorbike. hehe
Now picture this:
You invest $100,000 in a low-risk IRA for 6% profit. You work 7 days a week doing ANYTHING and make more than $1000/month. Your wife gets a job and makes $200/month. You ride a bicycle and live in a cheap apartment. You could save about $300/month. Your wife cuts and runs after 2 years... You still have $115,600 and a bicycle. You buy a motorbike for $1500 and get a new wife and better job. Now you get $1500/month plus your new wife's $200 so you move into a deluxe apartment in the sky. and so on and so forth.
Honestly, Thailand is one of the worst places to invest in a business(unless it involves slave-labour). Seriously though, get out a spreadsheet and run the numbers. The most profitable business in Thailand is marrying foreigners and having them put assets in your name.
