Re: Currency Exchange Rates Thread
33.25 baht per 1 US dollar at the moment. If it continues to rise I might have to transfer some cash into baht.

What does she have to do with the pound KK?
I'm just beginning to see a thing in the markets. Last December sent pounds to oz because the pound was weakening...then the baht started to devalue against to oz dollar, so my decision looked really good...the pound has continued to weaken against the oz dollar, so now I can make some wonderful money returning the cash I sent last December...funny thing is...now the baht is weakening against the pound, I can make more money on the money from oz to the uk, to Thailand...two-hits on the same pile of money.
The thing is, I'm essentially a financially conservative left-wingist...so even tho I can see there is money to be made...I am really frightened to begin gambling in the markets...
I've seen many make and many lose money in those devilish markets...and I don't really need more money, but I do need what I've managed to save...
Anyhoop...

I lost $10,000 of my hard earned money in 2 days, so I think I will stick to your philosophy.

I reckon she or he has the power to make it go up and down like.

Re: Currency Exchange Rates Thread
I am heading out to x-fer some US Dollars to Thai Baht in my Thai account. Right now SCB will give me a rate of about 33.87 per dollar. I was waiting till it hit 34 to x-fer, but it seems like it has slowed down a bit and I am not sure if it will start to regress of not.
Then I am going to wait awhile to see what the trends look like.

Re: Currency Exchange Rates Thread
I'm being paid in South Korean Won and I'm taking a hammering right now, the damned Won is 30.4 baht to 1,000 won right now, I figure I'm losing $400 a month difference since the beginning of the year.
Shit, shit, shit, shit.

Re: Currency Exchange Rates Thread
Can you convert to another currency (USD perhaps) before then converting again to THB to reclaim some of that Stretch?

Re: Currency Exchange Rates Thread
How are folks feeling about the baht at the moment.
Indonesia seems in meltdown mode.
I know there are instruments in place that only allow for a certain percentage drop in a twenty four hour period.
I can't imagine why the baht isn't falling faster than it is? What are folks doing with their baht holdings. I'm thinking tomorrow I head to yonder bank and pretty well liquidate all baht holdings.
This coming weekend could be precarious in my view.
I can see it going to 40 baht to the dollar, though I know that sounds extreme.

Re: Currency Exchange Rates Thread
Not for any one reason AO.
It just seems that for the last couple of weeks all bets are off. One day an institution is bragging big profits and the next morning they're in bankruptsy court.
I know it seems far flung considering these economies are much better "insulated" than back in 1997.
I'm not really trying to sell my view here but looking for suggestions from those a little more economically savvy, particularly as it relates to the emerging markets.
I know the fundamentals including currency reserves, balance of trade are still in good shape.
If Indonesia goes into the shitter, why not Thailand?

Russell here is why history. 1980 Thai baht 25 to the dollar. 500 rupiah to the dollar.
Today its 34 or 35 to the dollar on the baht and 10,000 on the rupiah. No banking apparatus in Indonesia. When the shit hit the fan 12 years ago they tried to attract money and were giving 17% interest. Look what the end result is. Despite the politics this is a fairly stable economy.
But I will give you this. I was stupid and didnt change into dollars at 32. But seeing what was going on I made a substantial transaction at 34, and will do again if it hits 34.90. Better to be safe than sorry.
