Investing in Thailand
i hate letting my money sit in a bank. In the states its rather easy to get going with a whole range of investment opportunities, but thailand strikes me as an entirely different proposition. whats out there for someone willing to stomach some moderate volatility?

Re: Investing in Thailand
well, you could always keep it in the states and move it around a bit into various investments using their on-line services, though, IMO, the stack of cards (pyramid scheme, read: M3 money supply from the Fed) of the American economy is being held up by the big boys in d.c. and new york for now, though Freddie, Fannie and banks are starting to fall and the whole thing could very well collapse (though I'm a conspiracy theorist ).
It might be better to keep those bags of rubles under your mattress.

Re: Investing in Thailand
IMO, THailand is not the country in which to invest. Way too volatile.

also, there is always FOREX (I did it myself for a while). though you can make a lot of lose a lot and it's quite addictive like gambling There is actually a thread on Ajarn about that and one poster seems to be doing well. For me it was quite stressful.

o, COMPLETELY AGREE. guess the title should be investing FROM thailand. curious to know whats available to someone looking for 8-10% gains per annum.
for anyone whos been here for 20+ years, is it really true that thai banks used to give 13-15% interest in certain savings accounts? the '97 crash brought it all to an end supposedly.

Re: Investing in Thailand
down on Sathorn there are stock trading rooms, where investors sit around in fancy chairs sipping on drinks while staring at all the trading boards on the wall. Some of them do quite well, from what I hear. other than that, probably better to go with one of the American or Western banks down on Sathorn, IMO. But, yep, there are probably some other posters who will drop in on this thread who know more about it.

ill pass on forex, thanks very much. wish i could just gamble on sports and play poker for a living, but alas the lifestyle that results is rather disgusting and solitary, and one which is virtually impossible to successfully pull off here.

Re: Investing in Thailand
Invest in what you know and understand.
What do you know and understand about investments outside the US?
...or even inside, for that matter?

Re: Investing in Thailand
samsara,
Some US based online brokerages such as Charles Schwab and TDAmeritrade do offer ATM cards (as well as linking to US checking accounts if you still maintain one) these days, so access to funds may not be all that bad and Asian funds/etfs are of course readily available. If you are not looking to trade the SET, not sure would open a brokerage account in Thailand. I guess you could also look into Boom Securities out of HK- never used them but recall hearing some mumblings that they were pretty good.
actually was just poking around my td ameritrade account-- can also wire money in (free) and out ($25). other brokerage firms probably offer the same.

Re: Investing in Thailand
The Set has one index fund. I forget the ticker symbol for it, but it does exist. It's an ETF so it trades just like a stock and you can buy and sell it from any brokerage. There are no bear ETFs in Thailand, and you cannot short stock. So your only option is to buy long, or trade derivatives. There is a set 50 index future and there are index options. However, the options are very illiquid and should be thoroughly understood before using. Most US brokerages can wire transfer withdrawls to your bank in Thailand in 1 day. $50 fee though. The nice thing about US brokerages is that you can be cash can be guaranteed by SIPC, FIDC, and Lloyd's. If you need help finding that ticker symbol for the set index ETF let me know and I'll find it for you.
