Re: Bailout rejected! American economy screwed?

They made it up to be sufficiently ginormous to frighten everyone into rapid action.
You won't believe where that $700-billion bailout figure came from | Top of the Ticket | Los Angeles Times
You won't believe where that $700-billion bailout figure came from

    Here's something that
John McCain and Barack Obama and Sarah Palin and even longtime Washingtonian Joe Biden probably don't know. Not to mention Bob Barr, Ralph Nader and Ron Paul, who usually knows everything.

It's a fascinating footnote to the economic and political bailout debate that's kept so many people from more properly focusing on the pennant races and the Colts' problems in the last week. (Incidentally, do you think we'd have had this big fight if President Bush had called it a "rescue" plan instead?)

Our buddy from two lifetimes ago, Carl Lavin over at Forbes.com, points out a fascinating paragraph buried in a story on his website late last week by Brian Wingfield and Josh Zumbrun.

You know, this $700-billion figure that exploded into everyday political parlance almost as fast as Sarah?
The $700-billion "cost" of resolving the financial crisis and restoring confidence and liquidity in the credit markets starting this morning?

The $700-billion figure that Senate Democratic Majority Leader
Harry Reid first said he could really use McCain's help with, but then the Arizonan took him up on it and Reid suddenly said the Republican would only get in the way and anyway, Reid said, he already had a done deal, except he didn't and the Nevadan ended up being the embarrassed one?

The $700-billion figure that dominated the first part of the first presidential debate of the 2008 general election season between McCain and Obama?

The $700-billion figure that won't really end up being anywhere near the actual cost because no one knows what all those mortgaged properties are really worth now anyway? Which is the whole problem in the first place because the institutions holding that paper don't know the value of what they're holding either, which is why everyone suddenly got so frightened?

That $700-billion figure that won't really last because eventually the feds will sell off what they're buying and might even make a profit in the end as they did with the Chrysler bailout warrants years ago?
You know where that very important $700-billion figure came from?
Here's a quote from that Forbes story:
"It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."

They made it up to be sufficiently ginormous to frighten everyone into rapid action.
    And it worked.

I guess we're going to have to wait till the 'Holiday' in Congress is over before we see any more real carnage in the markets.

Wall st up nearly 500pts last night....I thought they said that without a bailout, life as we know it was over.

Gee I can't understand why Wall St, the bankers, the traders, the Fed, Bush and the Legislators get such little respect and trust from the community.

Surely they weren't exagerating to protect their own interests, at the wider public's expense!!!!

Has anybody mentioned the real problem here? If institutions have to led money to people who can't pay it back...what does it say about the investment potential of anything these days?

...um...the problem was many institutions falling over themselves to lend money to folks they KNEW couldn't repay their housing loans....no jobs, no social security numbers, no permanent addresses: here's a 200K loan for you! Stricter regulation might have prevented the worst of the lending mess, and much stricter regulation would have stopped much of the Wall Street excess concerning derivatives based on those lousy lending practices.

Is anything worth investing in nowadays? Of course....just pay attention and strike when the iron is hot. A 750k ocean-facing condo in Miami for 150K? Sounds good....start due diligence. A stock from a solid company like Pepsi or Proctor and Gamble selling at an EPS ratio of 8? Buy now and hold. America's for sale and the smart folks are filling their shopping carts now when times are bad.

For once, I'm pretty damn proud of our representatives in the House. For once they didn't listen to the crap and scare tactics from Bush, the MAJOR PARTY leadership and the MAJOR PARTY presidential candidates and did what the American taxpayers asked them to do. Cheers to the House! No bailout, baby!!!!!!!

The best case against the bailout I've read:
Commentary: Bankruptcy, not bailout, is the right answer - CNN.com
American hero Ron Paul states the case:
YouTube - You're Going To Destroy A Worldwide Economy! Ron Paul
From the other side of the aisle, Dennis Kucinich passionately says "No!"
YouTube - DENNIS KUCINICH TELLS THE TRUTH...

Yes, them too. TC, do you know I got two reds just for that one comment about illegal immigrants? Illegal immigrants (and the others you mention) got a substantial number of these loans.

    I feel so unloved.

Didn't say they were the "real" cause, I said they got a substantial number of those loans. Are you saying they didn't?

Re: Bailout rejected! American economy screwed?

CNBC commentators reported a long list of the categories of people who should never have been given loans (most of them were ineligible for Fannie and Freddie loans (standards, you know) and so had to go to other lenders like Countrywide that had looser (or no) lending criteria). The former president of Countrywide, one Angelo Mozilo (a real organ grinder by the looks of him), was proud of his efforts to put losers on suburban lots and did a great job manipulating the greed of the borrowers, bankers, financial derivatives experts, hedge fund managers and the long list of those now out of work and floating safely to earth in their golden parachutes. As financial storm clouds gathered, he sold Countrywide to Bank of America and suddenly remembered urgent business in the Cayman Islands, I believe, or maybe it was Vanuatu.
