Here in NYC I spend 7.7% of my income on housing, but the city average is about 40%, and the national guideline is around 33%.

Sure it does--I still have to pay taxes, gas, elec., common charges...all of that combined is more than my rent in previous apartments.

In Hawaii I paid 40% of my after-taxes income for rent. When I was married and had a mortgage the mortgage was about 30% of our combined income.
