We Don't Have A List Of Rules But...

Posted 7th June 2008 at 16:12 by LDMA
We often get asked for a black and white list of forum rules, and whether down to sheer laziness, impracticality, or just reluctance to commit to them it never happens, but just analysing some of the decisions we've made lately, if we did have a list of ways you could get yourself banned, it'd look a bit like this....

The 'P' Word - Nothing is likely to have us reaching for the ban button quicker than one member calling another a kiddy fiddler. It's just one of those slurs that cannot be left on a public forum, and is unacceptable as a joke lest it be misconstrued, and even if the accuser is sincere, a public forum is not the place to air your concerns....go to the police for crying out loud. The only room we have for paedophile reports is where reports of arrests or searches have been issued from news media or law enforcement agencies.

Comments about a users family are another surefire way to get yourself banned.
While we allow more than our fair share of fiery and fruity comments as discourse between users, we firmly draw the line when innocent third parties get dragged into it, including wives, and worst of all kids. They are clearly not here to defend themselves, and we view anyone bringing family into online brawls as VERY low blows.

Continuously pissing mods off. For regular users, it's takes quite a bit to get onto our radars and it's often not a single even that triggers it (hence our reluctance to give a list of minor rules), but one thing people should take heed of is when one of us actually bothers to PM you or infract you and offers you a friendly warning not to carry on in a certain way. Friendly warnings can quickly escalate to "oh piss off", when they don't get heeded and the ban button gets pushed soon after.

That brings me onto the next point. We don't mind being told how we can improve...we even have TWO forums in which to do so, but there's a fine line between abuse and constructive criticism. Personal attacks on the site owners, or moderators are never tolerated....and why should they be?

It's fair to say that once you've managed 50-100 posts and start to be regarded as regular, you earn a slight amount of extra tolerance towards odd posts and behaviour...(but not much)...climb your way up to the dizzing heights of Kenkannif's postcount and you can even talk about your foreskin every second post...but if you're a new user, please bear in mind that you will need to establish yourself here before you can even think about getting uppity. The difference between a newbie's first post being "Ajarn.com Is Responsible For Deforestation In Thailand", and somebody with about 1000 posts saying the same thing is vast.
Inconsistent you say? Sorry about that, but hey, that's human nature for you.

This isn't the forum rules, it's just the way things are....we try to be reasonable, take things on a case by case basis and root all of our decisions in common sense, we sometimes get things wrong...c'est la vie

Courtesy and Respect are a couple of broad guidelines that could be penciled into the forum syllabus.

Keep up the good work Louis. Interested to see how the new blog section goes...

Cheers Man.

Here's to all the mods and you for good effort. I agree with the rules though can be a bit of a prick (but not foreskin) myself.
