When is a troll not a troll?
Posted 11th June 2008 at 05:42 by LDMA
How many times have you read a post on here that seems perfectly plausible, only to see the following posted directly after it?

I dare say that sometimes it's deserved, especially in some areas of Ajarn like the Soapbox, or the Virtual Pub, but one area of growing concern I have is when it occurs in the Newbie Zone.
Ajarn Forum can seem a bit of a boys club at times. Forum Elders certainly seem to think they have the run of the place, and to some extent we accept this as alpha-male scent marking, a natural part of most communities, but there's a very real danger that we sometimes lose sight of the real purpose and mission of this forum, to be an informative resource to teachers and newbies to Thailand.
Imagine you have just taken the time to sign up to this forum. You are looking for some friendly advice on your move to Thailand and are full of trepidation on what might be a huge life changing decision. You carefully construct your post, believing it to be pertinent to your situation, and submit it in the area of the forum which re-assures them that there are no stupid questions.
Your first reply is
Some people might not understand this Internet terminology and be confused as to why this term applies to you, some might and take offence at the slur, some might just take it in their stride and banter back. Unfortunately the former two situations happen far too often, and on their first thread. This means that people immediately leave and never come back.
This is clearly not the kind of thing that we want to see. Fine, we don't like the wool being pulled over our eyes, but I would much rather see a forum filled with informative, if implausable hypothetical situations answered by our users than a forum filled with insults, and smilies such as
or
where potentially we have a new member of our community.
Let's nurture our new members, not scare them off. Make people feel welcome, tell them if they seem to be on the right trap, but let's just drop this obsession with trolls. It's not 2004 anymore, and people calling out trolls where a genuine newbie question is being asked does far more damage to this forum's reputation, than just taking a real troll post at face value does, so swallow your troll hunting instincts, and let's keep this forum good-humoured, informative and welcoming to new blood.

I can't really see much of a case for having the 'wanker' emoticon if you're really trying to encourage sensible discussion.
Surely if that and the 'troll' emoticon are problematic then you're the person to remove them? I realise you're not just talking about emoticons, but really, what sort of interaction does ' ' encourage? |

An interesting point, but I don't neccessarily agree that providing an emoticon suggests that it is always acceptable to use it.
What we are talking about here is people blatently igoring our request to treat newbies with a modicum of the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully, the new notice I have put up with some diligent moderation should help us get this message accross. |

Fair enough.
I still can't think of too many examples where the 'wanker' emoticon will encourage congeniality. ![]() Or when one particular arrested adolescent posts literally a couple of hundred in a post why that is tacitly encouraged by the existence of the emoticon.Anyways - your call. (And maybe slightly OT - sorry) ![]() |

The wanker smiley has been part of this forum longer than I have. I think Marko installed it. Ever wondered about our core set of smileys
??Those came packaged with the 2003 Ikonboard but have come to represent a distinct part of the community's personality throughout all board software changes and upgrades. People get very funny about me messing with smilies...Kannif had a right bloody paddy with me once when Unwell goaded me into messing with his and making it show |

agree with the op and noticed that when I first came on this forum. But, also I think the word troll is over used. From what I understand it means to intentionally wind someone up. on this forum it seems to also be used to mean "sock puppet".
So, it seems that when someone is being accused of being a "troll" many times they are being accused of actually being a current member posing as a new one. Is that right? otherwise, I doubt that someone would come onto this forum for the first time just to do a wind up or at least there are proabably very few of those. Is that right? and, b.t.w., does o.p. mean opening post? |

Original Poster I think...mai sure...
Ken you mean that Ermintrude thread wasn't a real paddy either? I think this place HAS improved for newbies lately, and we've also lost a hell of a lot of spam just lately thanks to our upgraded forum. I hope this contributes towards an increase in newbies becoming regular. |
