Testing Testing One Two!

Posted 2nd June 2008 at 17:38 by Matthew
I'm not so sure this is gonna hook me but I'll give it a shot because LDMA seems to think this is my dream come true.

I've been looking into Joomla and some other easy-peasy type web page building programs. Joomla is used by Richard Barrow over yonder to extremely fine effect. His stuff is inspiration to me. Always quality and never a sour note (ahem...*cough*). Once I do get a page/blog really up and running, that's the kind of thing I'd like to produce.

On the other hand, I've been putting a lot of time into putzing around on here (ajarnforum specifically and the broader websphere in general) when I really should be putting more time, energy, and creativity into my teaching. This is and will be into the foreseeable future my career, after all. So the question is, how to make these two things mutually beneficial? Don't really know where I'm going with that but it reminds me of a few things I recently found myself wishing there was more of on this forum:

1- In the classroom:
A database of lesson plans. Sure there are lots of lesson plans on the internet, but these could potentially be honed and fine tuned by the whole forum collective to be quite good. In general, I think the classroom section has much more potential than actual value now. Wangsuda's and many others' contributions not withstanding.

2- Practicalities:
Similarly to co-operatively vetted lesson plans and ideas, there could be more valuable info on, say, BKK - where and how and what. Lots of great info gets lost in various threads without ever coming together in any particular way. The search functions are pretty good, but I can't help but think there are ways to spice it up.

3- I don't remember and I have to go teach a class.

My personal opinion is that blogging is as self-indulgent as masturbation and for that reason...

...absolutely necessary.

Matt,

One of the many things I'm going to try and do is get a newspaper/forum going for my students. That way I can "play internet" while seeming to work.

The idea about a database of lesson plans is great. But I would also like to organize my "supplemental information", i.e. worksheets by topic rather than the way I have them organized now...all just lumped together in several big binders.

For webpage creation I use the old-fashioned break-out-the-code text editors. Have also tried Coffee Cup, which came recommended to me by Tucows!
