Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
I'd just downloaded BitLord Torrent downloader. It was cool cause it also used the same networks as eMule and I could use it to continue downloading a few files which I had previously been downloading with eMule, but alas, I had to uninstall BitLord, due to it conflicting with Nod 32 AV.
Anyway I now have uTorrent installed and downloading a few flicks, but for the life of me I can't yet find the 'preview' button. Does it have one? I hope it does, or I'm going to have to go through the trouble of uninstalling uTorrent, finding and installing a new torrent downloader.
I like to be able to preview what I'm downloading, so I know if the music/video is in English, or not.
Can a kind soul help out with how I can preview music and videos through uTorrent?
I also currently have VLC player installed, if that helps. It previewed well with eMule and BitLord.
Also thanks for the guide Defender. It's quality, especially now seeing how Oink's gone offline and all.

Sorry to say you cannot mate. Don't see how any p2p client could do that. Read the comments on the torrents

Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
^ Shit that's sad, but I gotta say the download speed is enormous, but strange, considering my net speed is now no faster than dial-up.
With the other p2p downloaders which I've used they had settings in the options panel where you could configure them to use VLC player to preview partially downloaded music or video files.

Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
VLC will open incomplete files. This means that if you locate the file you are downloading in its incomplete state and "open with...." VLC you should be able to get some sort of preview once there is enough data DLed.
Obviously you will have to DL a decent part of it first.
Also look out for torrents that come with a sample file - usually a decent snippet that you can DL first to check for quality/language/etc. Also read the comments on the torrent site, you will usually find others have left comments with the information you want.

Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
^ Mate how do I work that? I just went into the uTorrent temp folder and the one movie, which so far only five percent is downloaded, has 30 different file parts and when I right click on any part, there's no option for me to open it with anything other than the default open.

If you are DLing a movie in .rar format (lots of small archive files instead of one big movie file) then this won't work at all. I doubt whether any software would allow you to preview that. Did you check in the file list to see if there's a sample?

Best advice is to stick with axxo movies ..... they are always A-OK

Mate, no luck. I'll google the butt off this problem tomorrow and try to find a solution. It'd be sad to drop uTorrent, cause it's downloading at *double* the speed of my internet connection (international speed test), but I do miss my preview option.
Goodnight

Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
OK, here's the way I got to preview most partially downloaded mp3 and .avi files, go into uTorrent's preferences, advanced, then set bt.prio_first_last_piece to TRUE.
Once you get the first and several more pieces, VLC Player can be used to open incomplete files.

Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
I'm still trying to get the hang of torrents and, so far, I'm doing quite well; loads of classic old filums downloaded already. For some reason I can't watch them on my DVD player but that's no drama I just watch the on my laptop but if any of you know how to fix this I'd be glad to hear any tips.
I have a filum called I Am Curious (Yellow) which is Swedish with English subtitles but the subtitles are totally out of sync and I don't know how to fix that.
Finally, I have two filums on the go at the moment The Running Man and Boxing Helena and they have just stopped. No downloading going on just uploading whatever that means and they are stuck on 96.2% with seeds 0(23) peers 0(30) and 69.7% with seeds 0(13) peers 0(22) respectively, how can I ensure that these download completely?

LLL, the files you downloaded should be x.avi (DivX) files and your stand-alone DVD player should have the capability to read them.
If that's not the case you should convert your movie files to DVD. A program to do that is for example ConvertXtoDVD. Available as torrent. Be aware that the converting process for a 700 Mb movie can take up to 1 hour. When it's converted you can burn them to DVD and can watch them on any stand-alone player.
Good luck.

I think Nero can do it as well. Just choose "make video DVD" or something like this. It will automatically convert and burn DVD which you can later watch on your player.

Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
Nero can do it but, as Stamp mentioned, the process is painfully slow. When it only takes about 3 hours to download a film, it can be annoying to spend another 1 (or 2++, depending on your pc) hours, converting it so you can watch it with a DVD player.
If your player doesn't play avi's then you can either buy a new one(!) or buy an s-video lead and connect your laptop to your TV. You will need external speakers though as s-video doesn't carry sound.

Cheers Sage, that sounds like the most practical advice (for a technophobe) so far.

Re: Utorrent .... the complete guide.
Leeds,
For the filum with the subs out of sync, you can dload various progs that allow you to load or alter subs. I forget the name of the one I use, I'm not at home now, but a search should find you something fairly simple to use.
As for the torrents that have stopped dloading, it sounds like you're using public websites, send me a pm with your email & I'll send you an invite to my favourite private tracker.
