laptop power switch
Ouch and ouch.
A couple of day back, after three years of problem free operation, I went to turn my laptop on and couldn't power it up. It an LG/IBM. The power switch is a simple push button.
I presume this could be one of a thousand things. Absolutely no indications that this was coming...so a real drag.
If the power switch is broken, is there anyway around it.
Any other thoughts appreciated.
Oh, when I plug it in neither the green operation or red "charging" light comes on.?

Re: laptop power switch
Thanks Whitey...
I did drop it off at my "local shop". Returned at six o'clock tonight and sure enough...the computer was working well.
The local guy here is a very fine fellow. When I dropped the laptop off, he was half way through a glass of whiskey. But that's fine. I have drinks myself.
When I returned, the laptop was all fired up and ready to go.
Except when I got it home I plugged it in and nothing. Except now the red charging light is on. But the switch still doesn't work. Presumably the technician somehow got it to work for him but when it was time for me to return, he was off somewhere and no-one in the shop spoke English.
Anyway, thanks Whitey. Tomorrow morning I will try to talk to the local technician and see what the score is. Thanks for the offer. I'll likely e-mail you tomorrow. I think an English speaking technician may be the key to this.

Re: laptop power switch
Sounds related to your battery. Just my knee-jerk response.
Those never last beyond 3 yrs, and often need replacing after 2 yrs. So unless you've replaced it already, you should be due.
My suggestion: sounds funny, but try starting it without the battery in.

Re: laptop power switch
I thought of that ex-pat. And thanks.
I did get it fired up here, but only after fucking with the on off switch for too long.
Strangely enough...I have never had a problem, as I say, but I decided last week to take it in for an "outside" clean. One day later...the first problem I've ever had.
Co-incidence.? Yes, I suppose. But I will always have a lingering doubt.
I'm suspecting that when it got "cleaned" a part of the cleaning equipment must have lodged under the power switch. Thanks mate.

Re: laptop power switch
Lings at Pantip were pretty good. Just around the corner from Data IT the big yellow place.
They fixed my notebook then found the screen was fucked so called me and told me they were putting the old motherboard back in since it was going to cost 13k with screen to replace it.
They didn't charge me for anything either.

Re: laptop power switch
I think this is essentially a battery problem.
It seems somehow that a fucked up battery interferes with normal startup process, even on AC power?
I have two questions. Would appreciate any suggestions. I've checked the internet and not much there.
1. The only way I can seem to run my laptop is without that screwed battery. Now I do live in the sticks and power outages a not unusual. Can someone tell me...if the powe goes out and there is no backup battery what is the worst that can happen?
(or is there a second smaller battery somewhere that kicks in?)...Surely this is not an uncommon occurence...dead battery and AC power outage.
2. If the power goes out, will the machine automatically shut down?
3. Anybody suggest where I might find a replacement LG/IBM battery? I wonder if it's the same battery as the Thinkpad?
Anyway..thanks.

If the power just goes out then it is the same as the power going out on your desktop. About the only worry is if you are having extensive write operations on your disk when the power goes out. You can get disk corruption. But mostly you don't have to worry too much. I am sure some have horror stories, but at my last job we had room full of computers without UPS backup and the only problems we had were from viruses.
