I figure anyone who has a bitch can send you a virus, and a lot of folks seem to have bitches. The worst cases for me were with game-related stuff. I figure many of these games dudes are also computer-wise enough to handle the task. True, and Mininova does that. It also gives you a good idea as to what the download is (rip, telescreener etc) and the quality of the download file.
As Hamster says, you also get comments if there are any glitches or suspected viruses in the files.

If you are downloading videos - avoid ones that have one large .rar file that can have various nasties hidden inside, otherwise it's impossible to get a virus from simply watching a video, even if it turns out to be a fake.
If you download software and games - yes, they come with plenty of executable files, crack, key generators and stuff. Make sure your AV program scans them when downloading, and expect key gens to trigger the virus alert - that's where the online comments can be very useful.
And then some AVs are sensitive to .exe's when in fact there is no virus.

Maybe I'm lucky, but after 5 years of torrenting I've never got a virus that way. I read the comments and only take torrents with lots of seeders/leechers.
Games come with cracks in various guises and they trigger many of the available av's out there. Technically a cracked exe or keygen is a virus by it's nature, but they are the friendly type of virus and not to be feared. Many times while reading the torrent comments on games you'll see the newbs crying about it containing a virus, also the game developers and MPAA have employees whose job it is to post on heavily populated torrent sites saying discouraging things like "fake" "virus don't download" etc.
Read the comments and use your brain, it ain't rocket science.

If I am using a torrent downloader ( vuze ) on my NAT/Firewall test, it tells me my listen port 6881 failed,
Do I need to add this port into my router somewhere. or is it a duff port, I have randomly chosen other ports, but nothing seems to come up good on my Nat / firewall test.
and my downloads are nearly non existent.....

Yes, you have to open that port in your router/firewall, and don't make it random unless you want to open it manually every time you start your Vuze.
How do you connect to the Internet? Do you have access to your router, if you use one? What make is it? D-link? Belkin? SMC?
There are pretty straightforward instructions on "port-forwarding' - that's what you should google for.
There's a thread here somewhere about configuring routers, it's not too old, maybe a month, and it was started by welshman (the user, nothing against welsh people). I had a lovely welsh partner once, unfortunately she was only a teaching partner and some other guy had to the rest of her. The only problem was that she wasn't particularly good looking, but maybe that's the welsh thing, i don't know.
Trep, I gogled my router, and the port it gave me to use is 6881, I have access to said router, but I cannot see where to check my listen port.

I've got vuze on my 'puter. How do I use an external hard drive for where the downloads go? Dunno if I've explained the question properly. I mean it stores them in my documents folder usually. It's taking up too much space though so I want them to get downloaded onto the external.

I couldn't be sure because I use uTorrent. That has an 'options' part where you can specify where you download to.
I have an extra hard drive in my 'puter which I use purely for torrent downloads. I usually burn the torrent onto a DVD, watch it then delete the file off my hard drive. That way I always have plenty of room.

Yup Robbi in 4.2.0.8, it is Tools, options, files, change default directory to eternal harddrive.
Be aware that if it isn't plugged in Vuze will get confused and will ask you if you want to make a new directory.
