^ I'm at work but will try when I get in (although between you and me, lest people think I'm dumb, I ain't got a clue as to what you're saying I should do).

Yeah my mate rated Traveler....but once I heard it had been cancelled I didn't bother with it. They do seem to cancel some good shows and let the dross run!!!
-----
Trep,

I've played other subtitled stuff on VLC with no probs...or is that a different prob?

My mate reckons it might be my computer settings I need to change?

Re: Subtitles!

Ken,

Your not gonna like this mate!

These files are encoded as ansi which can't be used to display Thai characters. They need to be re-encoded to tis620 in order to display properly.

This ain't too difficult. What subtitles file was it Ken?

Re: Subtitles!

So I tried it at home.

As I thought there's no way for VLC to show Thai script.

Converting to idx+sub is not straightforward either. I need to find which program can do it easily on the main computer.

What works is playing the video with Windows Media player (or media player classic, doesn't matter) and fiddling with VobSub filter settings (you get that with Klight codec pack).

Finally I got the squiggles on the screen. Bad news - they are out of sync, god knows by how much, they might be from a different Prison Break at all.

Now I remember it, I saw this site before. Lots of OLD movies, I was looking for Harry Potter 5 subs when it was just released and they were still on Part 1 or something.

What is worse is that many of the subtitles listed there are not translated at all. So far they've got only five episodes from the first season of Prison Break completed. It's my firm believe that the natives here can't get anything right when it comes to computers and Internet.

>>>>

Traveler is a good action series, fast moving and engaging. On one websirte it as rated as the best action series ever.

It's not too bad it got cancelled, though - the authors vision of what it was supposed to become is not very appealing. The story was supposed to go the way of Pirates of the Carribean - too difficult to follow and impossible to believe.

It was good while it lasted, though. Nine episodes, about six hours of pure entertainment.

Re: Subtitles!

Ken,

No need to worry, I downloaded some subs from the thaisubs site and converted the ansi to unicode, and they worked perfectly on vlc. If you let me know which ones you need I will convert them in the morning, as I'm a little bit pissed now

Re: Subtitles!

I've often wondered about inserting the Thai subtitles, but have never got around to sorting it it.

Having read the above post, I now know why. I just don't love her enough

Re: Subtitles!

Bet, how did you get VLC to show unicode subtitles? I tried on three computers with no success.

VobSub thing works, though. You get it with K-light codec pack, open video in any player but VLC and there will be a big green arrow in the task bar. Language settings on the first screen. In case you get FFDshow filter instead of VobSub, just scroll down to "subtitles" and fix it from there.

No need for WinAvi unless you want to burn your movie+subs on VCD.

Re: Subtitles!

Here's another thing you can do. This works - I tried it with Prison Break - 3x07 - Vanomos.

If you will view from the computer do the following:

1) Download .ssa file from :: ThaiSubtitle.com :: ศูนย์รวมซับไตเติ้ลสำหรับคนไทย, Translate Movie Subtitles English into Thai

2) Rename the file so that it matches the name of your avi file exactly (leave the extension as 'ssa' or if you like you can change it to 'srt' - it doesn't matter)

3) Use BS Player to watch the movie

4) BS Player. While movie is playing right click on screen and select subtitles --> subtitle properties --> font. In the font menu, choose a font that supports thai script like 'Angsana New or AngsanaUPC. Make sure you have selected 'Thai' in the 'script' drop down box on that font options screen.

And that's it - very simple.

If you want to see thai subs in your standalone player you will need to convert to 'sub' files from 'ssa' or 'srt' since most standalone players don't support Thai character sets for srt files.

Note: I couldn't get VLC to play ssa files with Thai character sets - I don't know why. If I figure it out I'll let you know. It is strange - I've converted the character set in the ssa files to UTF-8 and set the text renderer in VLC for UTF-8 and they still don't show up. The subs appear as white boxes.

The problem ain't with vlc, mate, it will display unicode. The subs file was not encoded as utf-8, so I used a little app called iconv to convert the ansi text file into utf-8 (specifically tif-620 for Thai).

LibIconv for Windows
