AUUUGGGHHH a VAIO??! But why??? They cost the same (actually.. i think the vaio is more expensive), but you get the best of both worlds with the mac -- able to run bothe OS X and WIndoze
I wish I could afford to make just a dollar a year.
Just Buy a Mac

Actually, I misspoke a bit. The laptop was for my boyfriend and, in all fairness, he used his own money to buy it. He didn't like the look of the Mac. Nevermind functionality - the VAIO had chrome handles and shiny buttons! (bleah)
When I get around to replacing my Gateway laptop, I'll definitely get a Mac.
Unfortunately .. I'm having a vision that I'll end of with a slightly used VAIO and my boyfriend will be using the Mac.

Ok to answer Red Hats questions, this is just what I know from my random playing with a mac. It uses a bash shell, and you can do everything else with it you could do... ok no. You get a slimmed down bash shell, with the mac filestructure. You can still install and use gcc and such with it, and you still get .bashrc, but to me it just feels like a Linux terminal that has lots of nothing useful.
If you are familiar with the likes of Slackware and the projects like slapt-get or slackbuilds. Mac has something similar but I am not sure what it is called.
Uninstall is pretty easy, not really a problem with a mac. I have the same problem with a mac as I do with windows, being forced into one GUI element. Let me know if you have any other *nix questions, I'll be happy to field them.
Also HFS+ is the devil.
Is le He.
He didn't like the look of the mac!? Well, fair enough... I have to say neither do I. I mean, I love the simplified external look and clean sides, but the chiclet-button-keys sat in a little dish looks a bit too toy-ish. Nothing beats the macbook PROs though (and I have an old Powerbook that sports the same style) -- The macbook pros are pure kick-ass industrial design beauty -- and it's ALL aluminium and silver. The keys are one of the best designs Apple ever did. Plus the fact that they PRO models are thinner than the consumer models make em even more attractive. Against a mb PRO, the VAIOs look like cheap rickety pieces of sh...Originally Posted by expatwannabe
About your vision: Might be true. The Powerbook I've just mentioned isn't actually mine. It's my wife's, but I've kinda hi-jacked it since we bought it **shame** but that's because she never really got into the whole computer-thing. Anyways, I'll buy her a white macbook to soothe the nerves :D She just didn't want one a couple weeks ago so I didn't get it then - -" But perhaps after I get the next gen macbook PRO she'll want one :P
What can it do that mine can't do? On mine you can type documents on it, listen to music, check email and look up porn.

I think this would be a problem for many people who want more than 4 hours useage - if you can't replace the battery you can't extend the time you can use it on the go before having to wait for it to recharge.Originally Posted by zehner

But yeah, I've been thinking who this macbook would be best for. Definitely it would suit me in school work -- lightweight and can interface with a projector etc. etc. I don't ever use CDs and if I do I usually copy them to the computer ahead of time anyways-- even with the optical drive (saves time and battery charge).
Definitely NOT for field photographers who usually carry around extra loads of batteries for their laptops and cameras. But hey -- these are pros and they'd go for a fast machine (and this aint built for such).
Gold-plated MacBook Air breaks Steve Jobs' heart

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Gold_plated_MacBook_Air'; We've already seen the MacBook Air bathed in gold and crystals, but it seems that people just can't leave well enough alone, with the folks at Computer Choppers (no strangers to gilded Macs) only the latest to spare no expense in taking the laptop to heights of tackiness that no one from Cupertino would ever dare dream of. That includes 24kt gold plating over the entire laptop and, in a final stake through El Jobso's heart, an Apple logo ensconced in multi-colored sapphires -- not to mention a polished gold SuperDrive to go along with it. If your eyes can take it, you can find a few more pics in the gallery below.

So basically they're the same? I'll be considering getting a new laptop this year. What's so marvellous about Macs?Originally Posted by Jasper
