As for the torrents, your workflow should look something like this:
1. download .torrent file from tracker site.
2. open .torrent in your client of choice
3. start downloading

You wanna make sure the torrent is seeded. It's a different way of downloading, but once you get the hang of it, you're gonna be useless without torrents.

go to Torrent Search Engine Searcher - Torrent Scan (Powered by File Sharing Z), a search engine of the biggest torrent sites.

On the left of the page is your site choice, type the subject in first before you select from the list.

Sumo, BT Junkie, myBittorrent, Mininova, Pirate Bay, Torrent Box, Torrent Reactor...maybe a few others.

I just typed in 'Bowie", clicked on BT Junkie (it always has a good choice) and I got over 100 results that have 6 seeds or more and are in good health.

I'd download utorrent. Simple, small, and it works.

As for Limewire, I gave up on it a few years back when their library shrunk...still serves a purpose and is good for individual songs. Actually I did a comparative search for 'Bowie' on Limewire, got heaps of results, and in 2 minutes I had download a Nine Inch Nail-Bowie song.

Soulseek was excellent 'til it started crashing my computer.

Plan B

Be careful also that you are downloading torrents from public trackers. Some of the torrent sites also have torrents from private trackers listed. If you try to download these you won't get very far.

Columbia, what kind of internet connection do you have? Is it your own line or apartment's wi-fi or internet cafe etc?

In some cases you just need to properly configure your uTorrent, in others it's simply impossible to use.

When you've set your port forwarding and the parameters of your bittorrent client, try to download a file from this site.

distribution: OpenOffice.org P2P Downloads

If everything is set correctly you should have a download speed of 80-90 % of your maximum download speed.

I am loving Torrents, just started with it this weekend and already have a few good movies. Also am rebuilding my music collection after I lost about 30gb of mp3's on my now defunct laptop harddrive.

A seeder is someone who has the complete torrent file available for download, this ensures you can get the entire file. Peers/leechers are others who are downloading files, you can download from them also but they only have the portion of the file they have already downloaded.

Here is a little analogy you might like.

Say you have one good student in your class who actually did their work (the seeder). They have a complete copy of the answers. only 4 students can copy from one paper at a time so being the genious little cheaters they are, they set up a strategy. The lazy students (leachers) start to copy the original paper, but around them can fit 3 more students each who all begin to copy the answers off the leech but only the answers the leech has already copied. Those 3 additional students copying off of the leeches are now also leeching but not from the original (seeder), they are leeching off their fellow leechers who are copying off the seeder. This keeps branching out with eacch level of leecher beeing one question behind as they wait for the person ahead of them to copy the next question.

Once the leech becomes a copier and a provider of answers he is labled a peer instead of a leech. In this way you can see that the whole class can copy the exam much more quickly than by doing it in groups of 4. You can also see to that the volume of copying bandwidth is distributed throughout the whole assembly with copiers also being the source for other copiers. The entire group of delinquent students is refered to as the swarm...

Oh the reason why it is important that there is atleast one seeder is that without atleast one seeder no one will ever get the complete copy since it is imposible for them to generate the 1 or 2 missing answers themselves (they are dumb bastard copiers after all).

There's one seed that rules them all - Thai ISP that caches most popular torrents. They do it to save international bandwidth, so that people inside Thailand download torrents from local servers pretending to be regular downloaders. Speeds are amazing.

It's not easy to predict which torrent is cached, latest movies and TV shows are the best bet. Cache should expire in one or two weeks, so torrents older than that will not be there.
