Do you really think this SE Asian city is way ahead of the curve and the schools are fully of Apple computers for all the uber-creative kids?

Re: Better to have Mac or PC in Bkk
You should definitely get a mac:
a.) Presentations are much faster, easier and a lot more professional looking when made with Keynote and you could hook up your mac(book) to any VGA projector
b.) You can run Windoze off the mac from boot or with Parallels Desktop for any Windoze-specific presentations (and if you catch a virus, only your Windoze partition will be affected)
c.) Word processing, Spreadsheets and basically anything to do with office apps or MS Office is covered -- MS Office 2008 for mac is available.
d.) Printing to remote Windoze printers is possible via wifi, ethernet or direct USB through Parallels Desktop, or boot in Windoze and have a full-functional Windoze PC
e.) Having a mac, you're highly unlikely to get a virus, with a PC in a Windoze environment at school -- it's a definite guarantee!

Re: Better to have Mac or PC in Bkk
At the Rajabhat I didn't/couldn't/failed to teach at for two whole terms, the computer lab was chock-a-block with gleaming Macs, including a full complement of those huge, beautiful monitors you pay a mint for. My classrooms usually lacked air-conditioning, the students had to photocopy all their materials with their own satang, and taking a piss in the student's hongnam was enough to depress a guy on MMDA; where there's a kickback, there's a way. I wouldn't discount the future of Macs in Thai educational settings.

Re: Better to have Mac or PC in Bkk
Intel Macs can boot into Windows or run Windows virtualized while booted from Mac OS X so it's an easy call, for me. That said I don't use Windows for anything related to teaching, just some specialized GPS software and to convert / open the occasional oddball file.

Re: Better to have Mac or PC in Bkk
PCs are the most common. Mac users think we are uncool. I have never seen a computer lab in a school here with macs. "Liberated" PC software is more common. To get a PC notebook repaired. Go to any IT center. New harddrive installed in a couple of hours including software.
Try it with a mac. Maybe back in 4 weeks. Maybe not.

Re: Better to have Mac or PC in Bkk
I've been using windows for a lonnnggggg time, sure I've had a few viruses but nothing that I couldn't handle.... the only thing that windows has done to piss me off (other than fucking paperclip bastard thing) is when I was sending my CV in Word format from 07 word to computers that didn't have it installed so it came out a garbled mess lol

Funny that, I installed a brand new hard drive in My MacBook 3 days ago in 5 minutes start to finish.
When was the last time you had your hands on a Mac or really looked into repairing / upgrading one?
Forgot to mention that it took me another 20 minutes to copy the clone image of my old hard drive over to the new one after it was installed. The actual time to install the hardware was 5 minutes.

Good for you EC. Glad they sorted it in no time. I did like the speed of transfering my data from the old mac to the new on. (Special cable).
My experience with my PC is: when broken take to the 3rd or 4 th floor in tucom. and fixed on the spot on come back next day. Cheap and easy. No warranty to mess with. (OR pay for).
I only had a mac at school in California. I did like it. The problem with fixing was based on a friends experience where it took 4 weeks once and 6 weeks another time to get warranty work completed. (It was not a hard drive problem. Don't actually remember the problems.)

No, you misunderstood just a bit mate, I did the hard drive install.
It consisted of removing the battery, unscrewing 3 screws that released a longish thin metal plate which exposed a plastic tab connected to the hard drive that when pulled the hard drive slid right out. Macs are really easy to work on. Apple supports the user installing memory, there's instructions in the bottom of the battery bay.
If it were something really bad like a dead logic board you might have to wait a few days for a new one to be shipped from Singapore but that is worst case scenario on my 3 year old MacBook. For most newer Macs, still under warranty, the parts are here in country and same day repair is possible. At least in bangkok.

Re: Better to have Mac or PC in Bkk
Like Eric said, Macs can run windoZe as well so you'll have two slices of the cake. Apparently, Macs tend to be a pit pricey in comparison to the same specs you can get in a windoZe notebook. But if you can swing the price and get a Mac, you won't regret it.
And just an FYI, new Mac revisions are rumored to come out in August.
Happy shopping!

Re: Better to have Mac or PC in Bkk
Definitely Linux! You can get a Mac which has registered hardware(in case it's stolen) and put Linux on it but PCs are much easier and a PC+insurance will cost less than a Mac.
Get windows if you want to have to upgrade to Vista in 2009...
