ATTENTION!!!! Do you know who is tracking your P2P downloads?

Just found a nice little program called PeerGuardian, which blocks access to your P2P stuff, from spammers, govts and potential RIAA or MPAA servers that are dishing out torrents to try and trap suspected P2P'ers.

V easy to use and seems to block some nastiness I didn't know I was connecting to on Utorrent, like a Patent Agency, and some kind of Government Integrated Telecommunication Network!!!!!!

Ouch, this isn't good... just checked my logs and have seen I have had something called Baytsp trying to connect to me!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BayTSP

Basically it uses lists of known IP's of govt agencies and anti P2P orgs etc, and just block them, so that you only get incoming connecttions and that you will only be sharing/downloading with other members of the general public and not some nasty monitoring agency somewhere who is recording what illegal downloads you may, or may not be doing!!!

No Vista support though!

Re: ATTENTION, Do you know who is tracking your P2P downloads?

Nope.... but you wouldn't really want vista anyway.. right?

All those horrible new features and the limit on MaxHalfOpenTcpConnections bobbins....

It isn't really a P2P'ers OS tbf!

I believe Microshite have tried to tighten things such as this limit of 10 connections to try and stop P2P,
and that has worked as well as a chocolate teapot would work when filled with piping hot tea!

The fact that there are bad IP's out there is very worrying though.... false seeds to trap you into becoming a name on a list in an office of a govt agency/lawyer!

I had my suspicions, but they have all been confirmed today!!!

People, if you are using Utorrent/Azureus etc, then please install this app!
(Unless you are on Vista, obviously)

Re: ATTENTION, Do you know who is tracking your P2P downloads?

Peerguardian works quite well on Vista actually. You just have to use the beta version.

Download PeerGuardian 2.0 RC1 Test 2 for Vista

It is important to note that peerguardian is not a be all, end all solution. Anyone can still see the list of IPs that are connected to the trackers. What Peerguardian does do is prevent you from exchanging information with those IP's suspected of being devious.

Those devious IP's are in every single torrent you ever download, almost without exception.

As far as bittorrent clients go, I wouldn't use utorrent at all. The code for the program is closed source, and there is good reason to believe they are in cahoots with the RCAA/MPAA. Just google it.

There are several great open source programs out there that you can feel much better about. One really nice app is called Halite.

BinaryNotions.com Halite BitTorrent Client

Deluge is another good one, but can be a little unstable (especially in Vista).

Deluge BitTorrent Client

I had heard this.....
I will investigate further...

Halite you say, thanks for the tip!!!

I was aware about being tracked through a tracker, but surely that would only show the IP of who is connected to it... not what info you are sharing?!?!?!

This peerguardian will stop any suspicious IP's from exchanging ANY info with your own IP

Not any. Only if they are on the list. I think it would be pretty easy to mask or hide an IP range, then if it is put on the list, to move on to a new one. Or they could just do it from home. See what I'm saying? Peerguardian is good, but most certainly not foolproof.

Re: ATTENTION, Do you know who is tracking your P2P downloads?

Yeah there are bound to be IP addresses that are not registered to these companies/agencies that they will use for tracking. As I see it, if the IP aint on the list then it will still be allowed.

I was just a bit freaked out how many dodgy IP's have been trying to make their way in since lunchtime when I installed this thing!!!!!!!!

Re: ATTENTION, Do you know who is tracking your P2P downloads?

A few weeks ago when I was downloading in california using cable broadband internet, i was downloading at 600kbps up to 1mbps! Upload was about 80 kbps, but that's pretty fast for uploading in my experience. That's with Vista and uTorrent. There are so many people downloading now that it's got to be nearly impossible for the RIAA or MPAA to monitor all the downloading going on these days. By the way, I installed an ip filter I hope that does something. Anyways, has anyone ever heard of anyone being warned/sued for downloading in Thailand? I think the RIAA/MPAA go after the torrent sites and/or their ISP and shut the sites down...like what happened with Demonoid for a few months in 2007. Of course Demonoid found a new home and is back and just the same as before.
PS-I'm not a total computer geek so I don't know a lot, but the Toshiba laptop I bought last February had Vista already installed on it. I find it to work fine and for $800 for a 17" screen and 2gb of memory (upgradable to 4gb) it's a bitchin' machine!

So do you know anything that is?

From reading a lot about this over the last 24 hours, it seems like this is the best bit of software for doing this.

Re: ATTENTION, Do you know who is tracking your P2P downloads?

Just installed PeerGuardian to try it out and noticed that one of the Education blocks was for the Thai Ministry of Education.

Thai MoC as well.

And after I posted the MoE here it came up again.
Spider bot tracking any mention of them?

Are you trying to DL anything from Thailand by any chance?

I just checked that Edu list and there are loads of Thai institutions and agencies on there...

I couldn't get it to work yesterday... glad I have it now though...

Re: ATTENTION, Do you know who is tracking your P2P downloads?

I am currently not downloading anything and have no active torrents uploading anything.
I'm not a big abuser of p2p and mainly download games and movies for my son as I can't afford to buy them for him.

These were some of my surprises.
MOC Netwrok Cordination Center|Anti-p2p

Ministry of Education Computer Center

and many from
The First Military Medical University
along with a mixed bag of around 20 other Chinese based intruders

Or you have some spyware on ur machine?!?!

I don't know how clean you keep ur machine.... but I'm not implying you are a dirty fella!!!
