I don't wanna hafta pay for another one, yet I need it to work on papers and to view work-related paraphernalia. Is there any way arond this? Advice? Thanks in advance.

Take it back to the guy who put it in. He should have a patch my guy does. Just hit messenger here on mine and the kids. He fixed it. For a while at least.

Funny you got caught without being hooked up to the net. Dont understand it. But such is life.

    Re: Help with MS Word

Hey... I'm actually gonna offer valid advice here...

First off, calm down. I know you probably want to give the 'asshole' a mouthful of words. Don't. TIT (This is Thailand) the guy probably meant well but most Thais don't have a clue what 'original' software means anymore. So if you're thinking of sticking it to the guy -- don't. You'll just lose face in public and it won't solve anything.

Now -- Microsoft Office not working on a pirated version of the Microsoft OS? Never heard of it. What probably happened was that since your OS was reinstalled, all the registration information on your computer was erased -- invalidating your copy of MS Office. It could even happen to an original version of MS Windoze.

Then -- if you didn't want him to install a pirated version of Windoze -- what WERE you expecting him to install?? Did you give him the original Windoze install CD? Bet ya didn't have one, did you? If you did, my apologies, and indeed the guy is a fuckwit. If I'm right, you are just yet another case of someone who has been bitten by the fucking Microcrap shit where you get a computer yet there are no System restore or re-installation discs. I don't understand how they can sell MS Windoze computers these days WITHOUT a system restore/installation disc since Windoze ALWAYS fucks up!

Lastly -- even on a mac, if you reinstall the OS completely, you will lose registration information (unless you specifically back it all up -- but that's for more 'advanced' users that know where the stuff is). On Windoze, I have no idea where this registration information is kept, and I have no idea how to get MS Office to prompt you with your registration information so you can use it again.

So, you'd have to reinstall MS Office all over again.

    See if that works.

Best of luck. You'll definitely need it (hey I tried my best, didn't I).
I wish I could afford to make just a dollar a year.

    Just Buy a Mac

JD - that sounds pretty good. Will Word attachments open in it? If so, I will check that out.

AO - I thought of returning to the guy who "fixed" it, however I'll most likely just get caught again, won't I? And I was online when I got caught - trying to open an email attachment from work.

Thanks for the replies! Any other ideas - keep em coming

Openoffice will open microsoft files, no problem. When u save from Openoffice you have the choice of saving as .doc extension as well. All good.

    Re: Help with MS Word

theanimaster - i do have system restore - is there a way I can access that? I did try to tell him that, I don't think he got it, tho. i'm pretty sure he has no idea what he's doing, tho, due to some other incidents. It's my own fault, tho, I don't know who to go here in LOS who is good. I never had the idea to go yell at him - 1, he wouldn't understand 2, it would get me nowhere. Most ppl learn that in the first two weeks here, I'd imagine.

Do any of you know how I can access the system restore? Will it still work, or is it deleted now that I got a new HD installed? If I can't fix it, i'll just dl the open office pack. Looks good.
    Thanks again

If you can't get it worked out, I'll second JD's recommendation of Open Office as a very acceptable alternative.

He probably thought System Restore would be useless -- which is in most cases, it is No sorry, if you have had a new drive put in, System Restore won't work -- it's on the original drive.

Yeah. I'd go for Open Office, since it doesn't seem you have the original MS Office discs with you. Take it up a notch and go for Ubuntu or Linux as well

    Re: Help with MS Word

My Word suddenly packed it in at the end of last term, no idea why, and I was too busy preparing test papers to take my computer into the shop, so I installed OpenOffice and haven't looked back.

I don't have a printer at home, so I use Word on the office computer to print the papers. At first I was quite nervous about compatibility, but the files transfer back and forth seamlessly. I use spreadsheets a fair bit too, for grading and evaluations, but again no problems going between OpenOffice and Excel.

I haven't used MS Office (at home, that is) for two months now. I recommend it highly.

Re-install everything again and --->>>>TURN OFF WINDOWS UPDATES!!! and don't update Office. You'll have no problems as long as you don't update. There's no need anyway.

If you are an Office 2003 user, then open office is the same crap....

Get Office 2007 or wait for 2008 to come.

If you are in a real emergency and it's only Word that fails, work in Publisher. Import the document and when you finish save it as .doc. You may even find Publisher a lot easier to work with.
