Output to LCD from laptop problem

Anyone have any idea why my laptop isn't outputting the display to my LCD when I hook it up via my VGA cable? It's generally worked prior to yesterday. Sometimes it wouldn't but then I'd restart my Toshiba and it would. It's fucking me right off to be fair. It's got an Intel 965 Express chipset. I've updated the drivers.

I've restarted numerous times and when I do so the screen is initially displayed on my LCD and the lappy screen is blank, but then just prior to my login screen it switches back over to the monitor. I thereafter get the message 'Mode not supported' on the LCD screen. I've also changed my resolution settings up and down to clock if that made any difference. It didn't but it never made any difference my using those same resolution settings in the past. TV is a Samsung 450.

So it was working right BEFORE you updated the drivers?

Windoze is still the only system that's smart enough to allow you to use (or automatically choose for you) unsupported screen refresh rates (hence the 'monitor refresh not supported message). Unfortunately, there's only ONE way I know of to fix this (and reset that bullshit Windoze bug): PLUG IN ANOTHER MONITOR. Boot with this monitor attached, check that Windoze sees and uses it properly. This will force Windoze to reset to defaults and forget the settings it had for your other monitor/TV. Then just re-attach your original monitor and it SHOULD work. If you don't happen to have any other monitor around that you can use to plug into, I'll let the next person attempt to give you advice. But yeah- for me, this worked (I've had this problem before because like I said... WIndoze is just plain stupid bullshit).

Alright... now for the part you can skip:

You don't get this problem with macs. If you're dumb enough (like I wuz) to click on an unsupported refresh rate for your monitor, the mac reverts it back to normal when it detects an unsupported rate - and in case you somehow clicked 'yes' to the changes before it does that, it reverts back when restarted. Smart. Now THATS how a 21st century OS should work.

No, I updated the drivers to see if it made any difference. I did nothing as far as I'm, aware. I'll take my laptop into work and try that perhaps. Cheers.

Toshiba laptops can be rather peculiar. Perhaps you could re-install their management software drivers, or reset the default screen selection via the on-board function key? Read their manual - there will be trick somewhere.

If you're having trouble selecting during OS startup, disconnect the eternal monitor, start the system, plug in the monitor, use the functions to grab the monitor. WinBlow$ is probably interfering somewhere in the process & needs to sort itself out.

For mine (yours may be different) it's....right click on the screen (a blank part)......and then hit graphic options or output or something....also control (ctrl) and one of the f keys does it.

Re: Output to LCD from laptop problem

There are two ways to send output to LCD - via Control Panel/Display, that probably won't work, and via Control Panel/Intel Graphic Options or whatever they are called on your notebook. You can also acces Intel via right click somewhere on the desktop or right click on Intel icon in the task bar tray on the right.

You can start fiddling with "dual mode" settings first - so that you can still look at your notebook screen and choose best options for the second monitor.

I'm afraid it has nothing to do with refresh rate at all, just find what the "native resolution" for your monitor is, it would look the best.

There are 2 resolution/cycle settings you need to worry about..
    1) video card
    2) external display

Like animaster said, it's possible your updates gave you display options that aren't actually supported by your hardware. So you should start your computer in safe mode and switch it back to 640X480. Then you can test each resolution to see what works.
