    Ipod WiFi?

I've been thinking about getting an iphone mainly for portable internet but they are quite expensive. Somebody mentioned getting an ipod touch and using wifi but didn't have any specific details. Does anybody use an ipod touch for internet? Who is the provider? how do you connect? Is it any good?

    Re: Ipod WiFi?

One of my students has an iTouch and he happily surfs any old wifi that he can grab.

    this from Apple...
    Wireless
iPod touch has built-in support for 802.11b/g wireless technology. That means you can get online anywhere there’s Wi-Fi. Send email from a coffee shop. Surf the web at the airport. Shop for games from your couch. Browse, buy, and download music and more from the iTunes Store. iPod touch locates nearby wireless hotspots, including protected networks. If you’ve never used a particular network, it asks you to enter a password the first time, and it remembers the password from then on. So the next time you’re within range, it connects automatically.
I don't know if that helps.

    Re: Ipod WiFi?

I have an ipod touch 2g (the most recent model) and it's awesome. The ipod touch is a wifi device just like a computer so you can log onto any wifi network you want to, assuming you have the right key. If you have your own wifi already you just go settings---->wifi and pick a network, super easy. If the network is locked, it will prompt you for a key. Mobile browsing through safari is really nice, it shifts into landscape mode quite easily and once you get used to the keyboard it's a breeze. It doesn't seem to remember some passwords, but that's a minor issue.

I jailbroke mine to put on custom layouts and new apps, but you could just as easily not do this and totally enjoy it. Overall, it's an awesome device and you would definitely be happy with it.

    Edit: There's a new one out as a of a few weeks ago. Apple iPod touch (3G) 8, 32, 64 GB Specs (MC008LL/A*) @ EveryiPod.com

    Re: Ipod WiFi?

thanks for the replies. Do they need a sim or do they have some sort of wifi chip inside. Sorry for basic questions but I've never used one before. I just think paying 8000 for an ipod is better than 20 something for the iphone. if anybody actually using this system could add comments?

^^that's great advice thanks. Are the newtworks free or do you pay a subscriprion. I would like a reliable connection as I don't have a laptop or internet at home

Be sure you know what you want. The iPhone is different from the iTouch. The iTouch isn't a phone so I'm sure a sim isn't needed.

The wifi is built into the device. It's just like connecting from a notebook. You pull up a screen that shows you all the networks in range and then connect at will. It's a great thing if you know a lot of free hotspots.

Yeah, I love my iPod Touch. It works great when there is a signal around. I carry it with me nearly everywhere I go!

Have an HTC and it connects fine to my wireless router. Also, my Sony Erikson phone connects to the wireless fine as well.

Have you looked at all of your options? The netbooks are getting better and cheaper and a guy I know just bought a good sized lite laptop with a 320Gb HD and 8 hrs of battery life for not much more than the ipod. I really think the ipod is such an outdated technology.

Yeah .. you can tell by Apple sales how outdated it is.

When was the last time you fit a notebook into your pocket?

Damn... I was just too stupid to realize that as long as sales of something is good that it isn't an outdated technology.

Ipod just got bluetooth. So cutting edge.

I've gotta agree with you here. For portable internet surfing, netbooks are the way to go. You can pick up some models for $200-$300 and they are ten times better than a phone or ipod for surfing the internet. Who wants to surf the internet on a 3 inch screen anyway? Plus you always end up using crippled pda versions of websites rather than the full site. Idealy, I want a phone that can do tethering and a netbook so that I have convenient internet access wherever I am, not just places that have wifi.

No, netbooks don't fit in your pocket, but they are small and light enough to carry around easily. The Asus 1005HA will give you 10+ hours of battery for surfing the web. I'm waiting for the new Asus to come out in a couple weeks before I get a netbook (the 1201n) as I'm looking for something with a bit higher specs to handle HD video, a bit of lower end gaming, and some of the cpu/memory intensive adobe programs.

Yeah, I always use CNET.com reviews to tell what is good. They are reliable. Also, NewEgg.com is always good to see what people are recommending and actually buying.

Asus is by far #1. However, I think HP, Samsung and MSI are all good choices as well. I am not sure about the Toshiba but apparently it is a steal. I personally don't want to go with anything that doesn't have a decent size HD.
