GPRS/Net Sim/1-2 Call

Two days ago I bought the new NET SIM from 1-2 Call. It costs 245 baht for the sim, but you get 40 hours of internet access per month, as long as you load on 300 baht per month. It works pretty good and is pretty cheap for internet access on the go.

I put the sim in my motorola v-220 phone. (The phone is a piece of crap by the way!). Then I hooked up my USB cable first to the phone and then to the computer. The computer detected the gprs modem and I gave it the motorla drivers I downloaded.

Next I created a dial-up connection using the phone's built-in GPRS modem. The number i gave it to call was *99# with no login name or password. It connected to the internet in less than 5 seconds.

The download speed has been ok, sometimes it slows down to nothing, but most of the time it is about the same as dialup.

Pros:
- You can have internet wherever you can get an AIS signal. Apartments with 10 minute cut on your phone? No problem. On the beach? No problem?

Cons:
- It is not the cheapest--- You get 40 hours for free and then you pay 50 satang per minute after that. Basically 300 baht gets you 50 hours. You could own multiple sims I suppose so that you kept your charges at 6 baht per hour which isn't very bad. With two sims, you would get 100 hours for 600 baht.
- You have to buy a cellphone with a built-in modem. Mine cost 4000 baht. But I bought it because I wanted the phone, not because it had a GPRS modem.

Yes, gotta eat some peanut butter!

The 999 baht per month is a better deal, agreed, but in order to sign up for it, you need to have your work permit, other nonsense, and then deal with the Thai employees who can't speak any English, pretty common thing outside of Bangkok. And with this I can get 150 hours(5 hours a day) for 900 baht a month. :twogirls:

Myself, I spent almost 24 hours online a day (15 hr at work + 4 hr at home) and I also like to keep online while I am sleeping because it's really fun when I wake up and get messages from my friends on msn or yahoo then I better choose unlimited internet connection.

I will use the package 999 Baht per month when I move to a new place but now I still enjoy my bloody dial connection with 425 Baht for 31 days - unlimited internet.

(bump)

Just got the same thing (and am really happy with it and felt like writing a quick review), only with the Solomon GPRS USB Modem (Model SCWi275u) at one of the AIS Telewiz shops for 7,500 Baht. No cables required as the modem plugs directly into one of the USB ports on my aging Toshiba Satellite notebook. Perfect for those with old but not ancient notebooks, have an old mobile phone that doesn't do anything fancier than making and receiving phone calls, but would like internet access while on the road.

The "promotion" is still 40 hours a month for 300 Baht with the 1-2 Call Net Sim. More than enough time for my uses as I only need it when I'm at a construction site or in the car between Bangkok and Chonburi, or the rare occasion I'm stuck in Bangkok traffic or get caught offguard and find myself in a parking garage during one of those ubiquitous "midnight sales." As mentioned, there are "unlimited" plans available, but I didn't inquire as to those details.

Speed is fine (although I only use it to do online banking and answer emails), very few noticeable slowdowns with about one month into using it. I use Loxinfo and True at home, but I'd imagine you can use this thing with your desktop computer as well.
