Open Source Release: iOS 4.3/4.3.2
Whoops, more Apple Open Source components - you know, trep, the kind that don't exist.
So much for trep and Baksiidaa's fervent assurances that Google will open source Honeycomb in due time:
From I/O 2011 - Confirmed: Honeycomb source will never exist on its own
Direct from Andy Rubin - honeycomb source will never be released.
Nicely done, Google. I appreciate Google's assistance in helping trep eat more crow....
HAHAHA! Did you even read the Article Cthulhu? Honeycomb is old news, next version of Android is Ice Cream, and it will be OPEN SOURCE.
Rubin answered definitively in the negative. Honeycomb on its own would not be open, because its phone functionality is very broken. Ice Cream Sandwich will take all of the Honeycomb functionality and open source it alongside code that is much more universally friendly.
"So, quite definitively, Android for tablets will not be open sourced until it’s been fixed to Google’s standards...Ice Cream Sandwich being the resolving fix to the mistake."
ICS is scheduled for release later this year.
Yeah, I did - but that in itself, using trep's logic, is irrelevant. trep and Baksiida were absolutely sure that Honeycomb would a) be the future of tablets, b) that Honeycomb would never run on phones, and that c) Honeycomb would be open sourced when Google is ready.
Based on what Rubin stated, and looking at the reality - they were dead wrong on all counts!
a) Honeycomb is practically dead, as Google has realized that it wasn't ready for prime time. It was a tease, that's it.
b) By unifying Froyo and Honeycomb into the next generation Ice Cream Sandwich, we end up with a future OS that will run equally well on phones and tablets, with one unified framework and foundation (oddly, very much like iOS handles it).
c) Honeycomb (which they insisted on) won't be open sourced - Ice Cream Sandwich will be.
