    The development thread

I think a decent majority of people doing the EFL thing is south east asia or passing through this website will have a connection with some of the hardships that are happening in this part of the world and would like to play at least small part in helping out.

I propose that a development/charity work thread be opened to try and galvanize some of the goodwill that I have no doubt exists within the farang community. People regulary post information about development projects and charity work that is going on throughout this region, but im guessing that such posts (needlessly) disappear from view. This idea will keep such issues (that are not gonna disappear in any of our life times) in the forefront of peoples mind, or at least raise them to a more fitting prominence.

We all have something to offer, even if it is helping to teach english to the displaced or poor to help them improve their economic prospects.

I dont mean to sound like Mother Teresa here, but I expect people to support this idea and offer constructive advice/suggestions. A dedicated thread to this broad area of interest will separate the ranters from the doers, and will be a very positive contribution.

I personally am saving up enough money to allow me to spend a good 6 months getting involved with some voluntary work because I dont think that it is possible to come to the part of the world and not want to contribute something to peoples lives.

    -----
Just a few examples of what could be included:-

News of forthcoming or existing development projects
Local charities that would benefit from farang help
Areas of particular need of help
    information on new organisations
peoples own accounts of what they have done/or are doing
Advice for people who want to contribute some time but dont really know how

    Re: The development thread

Sounds like a great idea. You have my support. I myself have joined the World Wildlife Federation of Thailand. I also did some volunteer English teaching in some slums in Bangkok and took the children to a holiday event, fed them and got them toys.

I feel that actions always speak louder than words.

Leonardo DiCaprio recently wrote a letter that WWF Thailand has sent out to its members...here it is:

    Friend,
I am writing to tell you about my new environmental film, "The 11th Hour." The film documents the environmental crises we face and the solutions we must begin to implement.

Please take a look at the trailer here: http://www.11thhouraction.com/trailer

With the help of over fifty of the world's most prominent thinkers and activists, including reformer Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, "The 11th Hour" documents the grave problems facing the planet's life systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans' habitats are all addressed.

However, the most powerful element of "The 11th Hour" is not a portrait of a planet in crisis, but an offering of hope and solutions. The film ends with a call for restorative action through reshaping human activity.

"The 11th Hour" is opening on August 17th in New York and Los Angeles. On the 24th it opens in other cities, and in the following weeks across the country. It would be great if you could go see it and bring a friend. You can go to www.11thhouraction.com to get more information on the movie and when it will play near you.

We need the message of this movie to hit as far and wide as possible.

The hope is us. Let's begin.
    Thank You,
    Leonardo DiCaprio
P.S. Please feel free to use the code here http://www.11thhouraction.com/trailer to embed the trailer on your website!
You have received this letter because you have expressed interest in our environmental action.

So if you're wondering why the heat's bothering you more than it should, try going here and viewing the trailer:

Well, it's a good and noble idea, but I'm not sure how much it'd be used or how much demand there is. If you can find a bunch of threads with existing content that I could use to shift and bump start a Development forum, then I'd be happy to take a look, but I don't recall there being much prior discussion the subject, and I'm not that inclined to start empty forums.

    Re: The development thread

I certainly am. Problems with my internet connection are preventing me from following up on this. I will say this though, as few and far between as development related posts obviously are (since people tend to add such things on non development related threads)
I dont see this as being a major reason against it since it will encourage posts and interest alike, so its my belief that the admin should show a little courage on this one.

I haven't been on this site long but I have come across a good bunch who have knowledge and experiences to share...there is also allot of passion about the topic of development (for want of a better word) in particular the tragic effects on the burmese people for example.

Many notable absences from this thread, if any one would like to PM me personally to let me know what they think I would be happy to hear their thoughts or criticisms.

    Re: The development thread

I would have been interested in attending a march if there was one in Thailand, but I had no idea of this. I've been on a mini-vacation the last few days and haven't been logging into the forum much...

I know the WWF is interested in putting me to some good use to help the animals too, as I told them I would like to volunteer.

If anyone is looking for a great way to donate their time in Bangkok, I have a couple of very close connections there. You can PM me or let me know on here and I can pass their names onto you. There are really some needy people, especially in the slums of Khlong Toey.

    Description

The Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) will utilize the global influence of President Clinton, and the skills that the Foundation has developed in worldwide mobilization to confront crises such as AIDS, to help initiate programs that directly result in substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. In its first phase, CCI will work with a group of some 40 of the largest cities in the world to develop and implement a range of projects and programs to increase energy efficiency and generate cleaner energy. Specific actions will include provision of technical assistance and the formation of a purchasing consortium to accelerate the evolution of markets for alternative energy products.

The City Director (CD) works with the political and administrative leadership to establish the highest priorities for developing and implementing programs that reduce energy use, use cleaner energy, and thereby reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The CD agrees with government on the specific role the Foundation can play in achieving these priorities, and then ensures that the Foundation delivers to the satisfaction of government. The successful candidate will place significant value on the rewards that come from doing something about climate change that is practical and effective.

The CD manages the overall city program, including planning, budgeting, relationships with the government and other key stakeholders, implementation, monitoring and reporting, and expectation management.

The CD also determines when specialized expertise needs to be made available within the city, and coordinates with the appropriate staff of the Foundation worldwide to ensure delivery. As the ambassador of the Foundation in a city, the CD ensures that all actions of the city team are consistent with the Foundation's values, and continually strives to strengthen the mutual respect between the Foundation and government.

As the senior representative of the Clinton Climate Initiative in the partner city, the CD is responsible for:
Taking ownership of the Foundation's agenda and successfully executing it.
Developing and implementing work plans for specific projects which will tangibly result in emissions reductions.
Where necessary, building a small yet highly effective team on the ground to pursue the various streams of work.
Establishing the appropriate processes and tools for planning, budgeting, reporting, and monitoring progress.
Developing trust and strong relationships with key stakeholders in government, at both ministerial and administrative levels, as well as with international agencies, NGOs, and donors.
Maintaining appropriate bi-directional communication and information flow with HQ to ensure the Foundation's capabilities are fully leveraged on the ground.
Identifying hurdles to taking action on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and continually refining priorities and action steps to overcome those hurdles.
Maintaining and strengthening the reputation of the Foundation as a highly capable organization, whose agenda is primarily to partner with government and assist with its most pressing needs in climate change mitigation.

    Preferred Skills
Fluency in English and local language of the city.
Demonstrated ability to favorably influence decision-making processes in a diplomatic and collaborative manner.
Additional skills as required on a city by city basis.

    Preferred Experience
Five to ten years experience in a business position involving inter-organizational cooperation and/or negotiation.
    Experience working with government.
Experience living and working in the relevant city.
Knowledge and experience related to environmental policy, the energy sector, or project management is desirable but not mandatory.
Additional experience as required on a city by city basis.

    Preferred Qualifications:
Masters in relevant discipline; MBA; MPA; MPP.

    I'm torn...
On one hand, I'm proud to see that Danish development assistance in a new review by CGD (Center for Global Development) comes in on second place. After the Netherlands... this is a step up from last year...
On the other hand, I personally know it's gone downhill since 2001. CGD has evaluations from 2003 and onwards showing the same, sad trend...

And I also know there are so many avenues not travelled that could improve the Danish assistance. One of them is the universities' roles... we still speak of the lost 20 years, and if things are not improving over the next couple of years, we'll be talking about the lost 30 years... somehow, the big donor organisations have not learned from the experiences of countries such as South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan... Three of the worlds most competitive nations (two of them in fact in top ten) and not 30 years ago, they were... well... nothing! Why, oh why, is the focus still on primary and secondary education only, and tertiary education and research still in the corner as if they were the bad, unruly boys in the class

Sorry, rant over... I'm happy we're still aiding developing countries with quality development assistance, just saddened by the fact that it could become so much better without any further costs
