Re: Brainwash

nana, just remember that you're not responsible for other people's choices... you educate, you provide the pro's and con's and you provide the information so that they can make an informed decision... whatever that decision is, is not your problem... remember, knowledge is power, power is the ability to make decisions, but you're only responsible for your own decisions...

hang in there, girl!

Re: Brainwash

You might hate me for posting this Nana but I don't really see anything wrong with 7/11. With my strange working hours, 7/11 can be very handy (that and Kao Mun Gai Pratunam) when I need to feed my hungry and thirsty staff at 3.30 in the morning. When I have to do a job (I'm a florist), apart from checking out the venue, I will always have to check out if there is a 7/11 nearby. Not that my life depends on it but it's there if I need something at the strange hours of the morning when other local shops are shut.

I do agree with you though that meals at 7/11 are not the same as freshly cook food but that should be common sense. Still, it is sad to say that parents these days are ignorant and lazy. You, as a teacher, is trying your best to do whatever you can to educate these children and it must have been frustrating. Keep on doing what you are doing...don't get too upset over it, you can only do what you can.

Re: Brainwash

Pumpkin thanks for your opinion. I understand that life in Bangkok or big city can be more hectic. I myself experienced that and know what it was like. People find it more convenient to go to 7-11. I myself went to Family mart in those days as I knew that it belonged to a Thai company. Now if it's needed I will choose to go to Freshmart as in Surat Thani all Family mart now closed down because every Family mart has 7-11 opening next to them.

Now in my hometown, a small village outside Surat Thani city, there are three 7-11s opened in the last year. People in the market now don't earn as much as they used to. Far from that consumers here would rather pay for the petrol for 400-500 baht to buy stuff from Tesco than buying from local shop for the same price.

With the exception of that beautiful gal, Pumpkin... 7-11 sucks
I never shop there unless all the mom and pop shops are closes and that is in regards to beer.
I contiunally ask my students where they ate over the weekend and night before, meanwhile ripping on all the fat fcuks for eatin fast food and hotdogs and lookchin shit. My big boss encourages this, but made me take it out of the books i write for the school as we don't want a confrontation with the fast food shit corporations.... Nana, PM if you ever get some ball rolling to change this shit. I got a bit of time and more money tha time to spare to participate.

(Lovely compliment thank you!) I guess one main problem is (like I said before) that people are just so lazy these days. I use 7/11 when I need to and for me, that's what the stores like 7/11 are for. It would be really difficult to fight against big corporations, I think, as they have the same right to be there as much as any other stores. Perhaps trying to change the attitude of people might be a littel easier. Which every way, it is going to be a uphill struggle.

I agree with discuss that choice is a personal thing and that knowledge is power. I am a big believer in education and only through education can we turn this society around. I mean, never mind 7/11, look at our political situation at the moment.....it's buggered innit?

That's very true, Pumpkin. There is almost no way here in a small town for us to fight with a big company like that. When I visitted Koh Pha Ngan last month, there are a lot of signs going on saying " We don't want Tesco Lotus". I asked one of the local people about it and he said that most people hate the idea but there's actually nothing they can do about it. He also points it out to me that it's good for the consumers but in a long term, the island will suffer as money that tourists bring to the island will go to Tesco instead of the locals that try to make a living.

Re: Brainwash

I guess you will have to really think of why you personally want to fight against big corporations. Local shops are protesting because they are losing their income. But on the other hand, Tesco is also creating more job opportunities in your local area more than the small shops could ever done. Income made are taxed and money are brought back to the community.

Do I shop at Tesco? Yes I do. Personally, I pefer to shop in Tesco than in my local talad, not because I am for big corporations, but because it is most convenient for me. Still, I wouldn't drive 1 km just to get a bar of soap, I would get it from my local shop in my Mhoo Bahn.

I do agree with you in your earlier post that it's a horrifying thoughts that children are being fed with 7/11 food which can't be good for them. Still, local shops are also packed full with unhealthy 'khanom' which can't be that good for the children as well. As I said earlier, knowledge is a precious thing, once you have that knowlege you can make decisions which is right for you. (ie....if I want to murder a double cheese whopper, it's because I wanted to and not because I am eating it for its nutritious value) .

My opinion about convenience stores is not about politics. I only try to tell kids that they have choices and better choices than 7-11. I teach them to recycle their rubbish and not to over-use the plastic bags. Also I teach them that we should support local businesses as we all need to support each other here.

I live in a very small town, not in a big city, so the effects are greater here than eg. Bangkok. Those of you that have chose to criticise me for having good intentions are pretty childish as I don't think I do anything bad here.

P.S. Thanks Pumpkin, I do see your points and Tesco do give people job but the wages are low and encourage people to leave their hometown to bigger cities.

P.P.S Jackstraw, after 260 posts, don't you know how to quote people?

No problem. But putting Tesco on one side, how do the local make their livings? And, is there enough job opportunities around to keep people from moving into the big city?

I am all for recycling and do whatever I can. I will have to admit that I do find 7/11 policy on giving out plastic bags a little over bearing. Come on, I don't need a bag if I buy one tiny pack of mint!
