Yeah, on the one hand, BTS gave me a funky cloth "we're saving the planet, hoorah" bag the other day, when I spent a certain amount of bahtage.
On the other hand they tried to put my very slim copy of Time Asia Magazine in a placcy bag and gave me that "you're a nutter mate" look when I said "Mai ao Toong na khrap"!

Re: Brainwash
This is the debate we heard all the time in the states. Not about 7-11 though but about walmart.
I'm ambivalent about 7-11 here. On the one hand, I don't think its a good thing that they are pretty much the only game in town. Monopolies are not good.
On the other hand (and obviously its related) 7-11 have pretty good service. Their lines are never that long, they are always open, they do the inventory thing well...its just that they seem to have a bias against anything remotely healthy.

I don't think that these staff are educated by their companies about cutting down the use of plastic bags yet. Almost every store now provides an option to buy "bag for life" and I paid for that. On one occasion, the Big C staff tried to charge me extra for the bag that I bought weeks ago. I don't think my bag look that new.

can't have enough people teaching this.
You don't need a plastic bag for 2 batteries, or for a can, or for one bag of crisps etc.

Sure loads of countries doing that, "BUY AMERICAN" and the australians "buy australian made/owned products" they even have a logo of a kangaroo on all the products that are Australian made or owned.
But IMO the local product has to be of equal price and quality and not something shite, I'm from Europe but if a Japanese product is half the price and the same quality, I'll have that one instead thank you very much.

You complain about Tesco but do you know where all the mom and pop stores buy their stock? kinda a love/hate relationship innit

Re: Brainwash
Kikiat, Thanks a lot for the comments.
I do totally agree with you about the product standard. I do not wish to see my students eat fried meat balls that were cooked in black used oil either. I understand that local businesses have to keep up their standard to compete with big companies.
About Tesco, people here do not go to Tesco for stock but Macro or local whole-salers. They are the one that provides whole sale goods. My parents were in food and snack delivery business for more than 10 years and now my brother runs on the business. In our town, there are local whole sale shops that stock various goods and provide cheaper price than Macro. Everyday my brother can load up all the stuff and off he goes selling them. He then will be back in the evening to pay what he bought. I don't see Macro would provide this service. So there are more options and sometimes if you look hard, you will find that the option is way too good to stick to the big foreign companies.

Re: Brainwash
Hi kingwilly, thanks a lot for your concern. I do understand that people on this forum can be very cautious about trolls as it happens often enough. However I am glad that you comment on me bettering my english. I have to say that I now check my post before posting or if there's any mistakes, I will try hard to edit as fast as I notice.
I am not a troll. I am 26 year-old Thai who happens to graduate from a decent Uni, have been travelling to Europe since I was 18, lived in Guernsey, Channel Islands for 2 years. That's all. I have met a few people on this forum and they can tell that I am not a troll at all. If you have any doubt, check it with Blackjack or Natalie8.
Have a nice day.

Re: Brainwash
It's all about free market, capitalism are moving ahead, fast, with that come good, bad and the ugly.
I love mom and pop's store, they provide family like services...however, in today free and open market, everyone out there are trying to make money, and competing for customers so the competition between the small family run businesses vs big company are going to be tough. At the end of the day, the consumers are the one that benefited the most. We as consumers have the choice to shop.
