Development agencies dealing with Thai/Burmese border

Can anybody help with this? A good friend of mine is wanting to come out to Thailand asap to get involved with some teaching development work along the Thai/Burmese border

I know there are a lot of projects, charities and agencies that cover this massive border...and there are a lot of displaced people that would benefit from qualified and experienced volunteers as she is...so if anybody could post up any links, names of small organisations or contacts about this matter I (and anybody else who has an interest in this) would really appreciate it

    Cheers

    Hi Loxley,

I have a friend who is currently working for the ''Burma Volunteer Project" on the Thai/Burma border. He highly recommends the program. If you are interested in the program, I may be able to put you in touch with him. He is there till May. Have a look at their website, and let me know. I will eventually volunteer here in the future.

    Good Luck!

phuketbound. this looks like a good programme and nice to see one where volunterring is actually free. Too many cowboys profitmaking volunteer organisations here.

^yes, it is free, and meals, and accomodation are provided. The organization works with what you know. If your background is in politics, then you can somehow teach them politics. If your background is in teaching, you can teach English. My friend is doing teaching a variety of subjects to the different ethnic tribes.

Call UNHCR (office on Sukhumvit) they have refugee camps and do support ESL teaching. Practically no pay but a few benefits. Also for pay George Soros has positions in his Philathropic Organization. I think it is called One World. This would pay and have health benefits. (About the same a a Thai Government School). Google it. My info is a bit dated as I have lost contact with my friends doing Burmese refugee work.

I wish him the best. Have him make sure he gets typhoid, tetanus, polio HEP A and B booster.

(SELF CENSORED--YOUR PM BOX IS FULL.)

The refugees were Karen, Mon, Shan. Mostly Shan.

Thanks for the link Phuketbound. I'd love to do something like this when I have a bit more experience. The Burmese I've talked with are some of the most kind-hearted people I've ever met.
