How much money have you earned recycling household products?

In Cambodia I earned 77 baht.

In Thailand I have earned 165 baht.

It pays to recycle...

Thailand has a great system of recycling through the "saling salang" guys who come around on the old bike to buy your glass, cardboard, cans, and plastic. They have been doing this job forever. I for one just give what we have to them. The guy always pulls out his scale to weigh things and buy them even though I have been giving him our stuff for over 9 years.

Why give it away free when they're more than willing to pay cash for it? They probably get more for turning the stuff in to collection points than they would give you anyways.

The local Carrefour placed three recycling bins respectively for plastic, cans and paper, outside the main entrance. After two or so weeks they disappeared. The wife asked a member of staff why and, eventually, a duty manager conceded that Carrefour had to remove them as people did not undertand how to use them, so they became simple repositories for any old rubbish. I must add that Carrefour did have instruction signs for people on how to use them and an initial promotion thingy to explain the concept to shoppers. Ho hum!

It's funny. You know, I can remember back home how you go to the local supermarket and there are like three big machines there where you take your recyclables. At the end, if you bring lotsa stuff, you can walk out with like 1000 baht!

AO, my recycler has his own pickup truck! Talk about advanced! He brings his wife and child too. Anything they can't take, I just throw away in the trash. Jimbo had posted about the cheese wrappers being recycled in Korea...I tried that and they wouldn't take them. lol They didn't take my loaf of bread wrappers either, so those are going in the can.

Actually I think it teaches them free market business skills and the importance of hard work for money. It teaches them to deal with farangs in a mutually economical way. This is important, especially since Thailand will likely sign a Free Trade Agreement with the United States in the not too distant future. Even the small guy plays his part.

I am not sure how much I save from recycling because I do something unusual. I got sick and tired of buying water every day. I bought one of those stanless steel triple water filters from Tesco and recycle my own urine. Put urine in one of the filter and it comes out as clean water on the other end. I refrigerate it and it tastes just like any of the bottled water I used to buy.

I give it away to the guy who does my soi. If you feel the desperate need for 70 gwah baht you must have real financial issues. Or you are what some brits would call a blue dick - because your fucxxxg tight fisted.
