    Global Climate; Arctic Methane; We're Done

    Apparently some new numbers have been crunched regarding the methane gas release in the Arctic regions. These releases have been discussed for more than a decade; the theory being, as the climate warms the immense deposits of methane stored in the perma-frost and the seabed as methane hydrates, begin to gasify and release. Plumes of 1 kilometer (or more) in diameter have been spotted off Norway and Alaska.

    Here are two links by two different authors;
    Arctic News: Global Extinction within one Human Lifetime as a Result of a Spreading Atmospheric Arctic Methane Heat wave and Surface Firestorm We’re done – Guy McPherson's blog

    These guys are talking major species extinction by 2030, yes, 18 years. David Suzuki (Canadian climate scientist) has warned of a catastrophic end for decades.
    If, this worst case prediction is true; then we're screwed, because it's way too late to stop it now. The trigger got pulled 40 years ago...

    Indeed, albeit a slow one. But I always wanted to know how we end; it's obvious we're on a suicide mission. Too many actually; but one of them will be the proverbial straw.
    So, now, I might live long enough to actually see it; if they're right, which I doubt (the time line, not the result).

    i read this awhile ago, vewy disturbing shit. but if as some people say we cyclically go through these warming periods, it seems possible that systemic adjustments will happen that may be only somewhat catastrophic, and that the changes perhaps will be beneficial in the longer term. beneficial to the ecosystem as a whole i mean, not necessarily for manhattan or the maldives.

    i'm banking on the 'too big to fail' model of climate change.

    Well, it might not be as bleak as these 2authors suggest. Dr. Malcolm Light, one of the scientists quoted by Guy McPherson in his blog, himself believes that geo-engineering technology can save us - by using radio waves to convert the released methane into nano diamonds. I've no idea how far this is a viable technology or whether it's still pure theory, but I don't believe we're done until we're done

    You'd think that we'd be trying to capture it to use as fuel
    Daniel Bedingfield claimed that his new album is what it would sound like if Sting, Stevie Wonder and Micheal Jackson were in a basement together - I haven't got the album so I'll have to imagine the sound of a blind bloke and a Geordie kicking the shit out of a pedophile.

    if you saw how the plumes release in these massive columns you'd see that not possybo.

    The trouble we go to to get oil from miles under the sea is crazy, surely we could think of a way to get some of this gas

    I agree; but 1K dia. plumes do present a minor logistic problem; but not insurmountable, IMO. Giant umbrellas maybe; constructed of carbon fiber and deployable anywhere in a few hours.

    Isn't methane passed by farm animals also contributing to global warming? Hard to believe that our docile cow friends, looking ever-so Norman Rockwell standing in their fields, heads lowered and munching contentedly, have been slowly killing our planet for generations.

    apparently. when you consider how many millions and gazillions of livestock animals that are kept for milk or slaughter it's mindblowing.

    not a denier at all, but i read that the last blowout of mount etna was many times more than all the greenhouse gases released in history. just don't quote me on that.
