I've been to India 3 times and haven't been impressed with restaurant/hotel Indian cuisine. The best I've ever had was prepared in the homes of middle-class Indians...I can't imagine eating anything better.
Spent time with a fairly well-to-family in Mumbai... enjoyed eating with fingers... home-cooked food was great... wonderful hosts... family hailed from the Pakistani border & were forced to re-start when India/Pakistan split... whole fandamily had Benzes...
so did they cook it or did they have a maid or chef who did the cooking?

I'm not sure whether it's because I am so jaded to Thai food now, but I've got to say that Indian curries are so much more of a dining experience than Thai curries. It just seems now that Thai curries are a chillie and/or coconut milk laden one trick pony. Indian food seems to have a richer more satisfying feel to them.
I like Thai curries but I love Indian curries.
Maybe it's because I'm British!

seems indians are kicking the shit! has to be, as others have posted already because we're all jaded with thai food eh...shit's luxury back in england at least, expensive stuff and rarely that great. whereas indian's the cheap stuff you whack down after 10 pints of shitty lager to give you something to projectile vomit at passing chavs...

The curries have a greater variety of flavour.
They are hot but not like the raw paint stripping heat of a Thai curry.
They use potatoes.

Balti is another "Indian" favourite - invented in Birmingham
Very similar in fact to that popular "Chinese" dish, Chop Suey - invented somewhere in the USA I believe!
