Re: Curries. Thai vs Indian

The Indian Alley in Chinatown has amazingly cheap Indian food. Only been there once, I could hardly believe how cheap the bill was for how much food we ate. Curies were around 40 baht I think, Nan for 20 baht, etc. I have no idea what the same of the place we ate at was. Only that it in a back alley off the main road and there were at least three or four Indian food places right next door.

I love both Indian and Thai curries, but to be honest if I had to choose for eating only one of the two I would go for the Indian curries!

I love both, but Indian seems a little too bland for me. I need the spiciness. Southern Thai curries, that clear up my nasal passages, rock my world!

I like Thai Curry in Thailand better than Indian, But I agree with Phil about England (at least London) also Hong Kong (in Kowloon) used to be very good as well.

There's a pretty good Indian restaurant on Khaosan...it's called Rainbow House. Never been disapppointed and many of my Indian friends turned me on to it.

Re: Curries. Thai vs Indian

Reinvented recommends the Indian on the corner from OMC. I've been sorely disappointed with Indian restaurants in BKK, which is why I cook my own.

I have a tandoor oven, that a mate from Malaysia sent me, I need to get round to installing it in the back-yard.

Anyone good at bricklaying??

Re: Curries. Thai vs Indian

Saw this great new Gordon Ramsay show last night caled Ramsay's Cook-along Live. One segement showed him plunged into a tandoori restaurant and straight onto the tandoor where he had to prepare naan bread and kebabs for a busy night after 3 hours training. He was a bit rubbish at first and it was nice to see him looking vulnerable in the kitchen, though predictably he picked up his pace and was a bloody expert by the end of the night...

I miss telly like that

I don't really think it that's difficult cooking in a tandoor. Setting it up and maintaining it, they are coated in the inside with a tamaring-water mix periodically, are the difficult parts. Preparing the food also, of course.

A restaurant that I used to frequent on Lamma island HK, had a tandoor made inside an old oil-barrel. His tandoor mixed-grill was to die for.

Good show...seen the first two! I do like Ramsay, although he often doesn't explain how to cook it fully enough for me.
