Where to buy veggie ingredients in BKK?

Think I'll have another go at not eating meat, or at least cutting down heavily. For health / ethical / environmental reasons.

Easier said than done in Thailand.

Anyone know any good shops / supermarkets in BKK for buying veggie ingredients (soya products, pulses, beans, nuts etc)?

I know there's other threads on the topic (just had a quick search of the forum) but if anyone can recommend any veggie restaurants, that'd be much appreciated too. Especially in the Lad Prao / Huay Kwang / Chatuchak areas. I guess indian restaurants'd be a good bet (handy as I love indian nosh).

Thanks in advance!

Re: Where to buy veggie ingredients in BKK?

Tops is pretty good for soy and gluten "meats". They also carrry decent vegetables (generally better than Tesco or Big C, at any rate). The Royal Project "Doi Kham" shops (there's on in Future Park) often carry good produce as well. There are Chinese veggie places scattered around Bangkok and beyond which often also carry soy and other bean products, as well.

For restaurants, check out the Happy Cow site.

Re: Where to buy veggie ingredients in BKK?

Cheers for the info Reg.

Saw the Happy Cow site on a related thread. Looks very informative. Future Park is near where I work so will pop in there. Will have a gander in Tops as well.

Are you veggie? Curious how thais react. For example, read a thread on thaivisa.com where a poster said that once in a restaurant the waiter forgot he / she had ordered veggie, returned the same dish with the meat picked out, and couldn't understand why he / she wasn't happy!

I guess though that thais might give you less stick than westerners, being generally quite tolerant as a rule / gross generalisation.

Don't think I'll quit eating fish anyway which should make things easier (given the omnipresence of naam plaa.

i eat without the meat products quite often but its hard to be strict about it and have someone else cook it as i'm sure you know. cooking that stuff your self is the way to go.

Re: Where to buy veggie ingredients in BKK?

The grocery section of The Mall is good too. Lots of pre-made veggie things like sausages, "fish: etc and the ingredients that you've mentioned. If you're close to a Lemon Farm, they're fabulous (I've always wanted to use that word ) for lots of veggie ingredients and fresh made items. They have a wide selection of organic produce. They're owned by one of the princesses and the money goes back into the community for the growers and farmers.

Forgive my ignorance, natalie8, but as you've capitalised 'The Mall', does that mean a specific one, or big shiny shopping malls generally?

Lovin' the tips by the way guys. Muchos Thankos (where's the damn veggie burger icon when ya need it?)

Can't we give the skinny, unhealthy members their own room?

I mean it won't take up much room and they'll be dead or dying before too long...

On a brighter note...isn't a farking great lump of delicious pork frigging cheap here?
Big C will have styrofaomed packets for 20 baht which is more than one should eat at one sitting....but then it's only 20 baht

Not really. Addiction's a tedious cliche.

This was the case in the days of Elvis, Johnny Cash etc (the blues guys had done it first, and countless others before them).

Heroin addict - some twat who invited misery into their life.

Pete Docherty / any other junky you care to mention - yawn

Silly question, but have you ever met a vegeterian?

Banging on about how wonderful they feel because they don't eat meat......at a barbecue Talk about inviting misery into your life!!

Then trying to convert the rest of us carnivores because as a kid they fell in love with a lamb.

Fuck off, you're wrong and you know it!

tommorrow, there shall be chicken! For dinner laab muu with kidneys and hearts on a stick.
Food, i love it!
