One of the offputting things about this bar is its location. You either need to mince your way through all the boys from the gay bars in the soi or walk through the car park beside Foodland.

But, if you want to meet somewhere first for a cheap drink and then move on somewere else more guest friendly or trendy its not a bad place.

Once you get inside you find a place that is family and couple friendly. The waitresses are just that, no dancing or pickup girls.

The decor can best be described as dark and dingy and in need of a good remodeling job. At times in the afternoons it can be as quiet as a library and just as difficult to get a drink - even for regulars.

The food fare on offer is probably Baht for baht as good value as you can get in this type of bar - 95baht for Fish and Chips - although food conniseurs would probably turn their noses up at the offerings. But their are soem nice things on the menu. Any Pizzas come from the Pizza restaurant on Patpong soi 2 beside Foodland.

The music can be pretty good depending on whether the dj/manager can bothered to actually dj or just put a compilation cd on.

Drinks wise its the standard draft Chang, Singh, Tiger, Heineken choice with only a couple of imported bottled beers like Victoria VB

Upside - Happy Hour is all day til 9pm so perfect for moving onto from The Exchange or for an all day session from lunch time. Chicken Pot Pie, Long Island Ice Teas (75B in happy hour!!) Good place to kick off an evening.

Downside - service at times, atmosphere, location, the advertising

I've never been so depressed in my life then when I sit in there behind those red funereal drapes, casting my glance across a room devoid of customers, wondering what the bar staff are dreaming about as they lightly snore. If I were a vampire, or a geezer with a comb-over it'd be the greatest place in town...

Ok, I went to Bobby's last night (actually some time in June). Here's my scene report:

Pool tables full.
A coupla guys with deeply crease-lined faces sitting in the corner looking half-dead.
A bald guy that looked like someone who'd do a TEFL blog.
An elderly gentlemen with a glass of ice.
The manager with his newly shorn head sitting next to grizzled veterans of every pub between Pnom Pehn and Brighton.
A coupla confused gay guys.
Myself looking like a total idiot and my friend looking only a little better.

I was in the Old Dutch the other day and was the victim of a 50% price hike!

Check the prices before you order, especially if you're a regular there, of you could be in for a shock.

John Smith's Bitter is now available in a few places. It's piss poor beer, but better than anything Thailand can muster.

Also, there's a rumour that Abbot Ale, Ruddles, Hen's Tooth and Old Speckled Hen will be available in bottles in mid November. Hopefully the supermarkets will pick it up, so all you lot outside of Bangkok will be able to drink a proper beer for once. :chug:

Great work. I didn't have any idea that there was such a variety. I have been going to the same 3-4 pubs everytime. Now I have goals. I can bar hop. If I ever run into you I'll spring for your first pint.

Well, I've just tried a pint of John Smiths and it was, well, tasteless to be perfectly honest. Just like I remembered it from the UK. It's a shame really, as another decent pint here would be excellent news, but I would put Kilkenny above it.

Ken - I'm out every weekend. If you're in town, I would gladly join you for a few beers (then I can quiz you about your book).
