This is one the best Thai movies ever made, in my opinion. Of the batch I've seen, of course. Definitely would like to go and meet the guy who made it. It's also hard to find a DVD with English subtitles but I know they're out there.

'Cherm' is a charming, moving romance between a young bar-girl and a middle-aged taxi-driver, which is unique for many reasons, in particular for the way it resurrects the spirit of old-world Thai music, sentiments, and atmospherics.
Sombat is a taxi-driver who works at night and one day, drives Nual home. Nual works in a massage parlour. She arranges with Sombat to pick her every night and a friendship develops between the two, who have nothing in common, except for their loneliness. The old-fashioned Sombat's passion is listening to old Thai songs on his taxi radio, and he revels in them, as his feelings for Nual grow. They have some happy outings together, and he is a blissful man. But suddenly, Sombat's little-known, past life catches up on him, and disrupts his happiness. He wonders if Nual was a real figure, or just a fantasy.
The highlight of the film, is the riveting performance of Petchai Wongkamlao (better known as ' Mum Jokmok'), one of the most popular Thai actors of today. The star is known for his comedy-roles ('Ong Bak' and 'Tom Yum Goong') and is refreshingly different in this film, with his understated air and earnest countenance. Petchai was nominated Best Actor, while debut-star Woranut Wongsawa was nominated Best Actress, in the annual Thailand National Film Association Awards. The film won three Bangkok Critics Assembly awards. 'Cherm' won the Critics Award at the Deauville Asian festival in France, and also won praise at the Chicago International Festival and the Pusan International Festival.
This is the second directorial film of talented director Kongdej Jathuramrasamee, who is better known as the script-writer of well-known films like 'Ong Bak', 'Tom Yam Goong' and 'Me Myself '. This year, he directed the much talked about romance-drama, 'Handle With Care'.
Director Kongdej Jathuramrasamee will be present before the screening of the film, to talk about his experiences as a scriptwriter and director..
Don't miss yet another remarkable Thai movie, in our Contemporary World Cinema series.

Have a look for some filums by หม่อมเจ้าชาตรีเฉลิม ยุคล, he's done some great stuff in his time. He's most famous for Suriyothai but in the olden days he did 'Powder Road,' 'เสียดาย,' and 'ครูสมศรี.'

Are you talking about the Prince? If so I have a few of his older films and they are 'good' and 'interesting' at best. I just don't see a lot of quality (what I think of as quality) in Thai film. More on 'what I think of as quality' in film here at a future date when I'm not fucking knackered.

Well, for two reasons. Firstly I was comparing like for like, as Tom Yam Kung, to my mind, is what you might describe as a pretty mindless action film, in the same vein as much of the output from Hollywood. Taken within that genre, I found it quite entertaining. Secondly, maybe I don't share your intellectual snobbery as far as moving pictures go. I watch films to chill out, so I'm not looking to be mentally stimulated as such. For that I usually read.
To sum up, I enjoy a lot of the crap that comes out and I was simply pointing out that Thailand's crap, for me, can be as enjoyable as any other country's crap.
As a point of order, I didn't bring them up, crew did.
