Sponsored by : Oh My Cod! British Cafe. Khao Sarn Road.
Had a hankering for Mexican as I set out from the flat this arvo.
Luckily, there's one not too far away, so I headed back there for the first time since the veg' burrito went up to 129 baht (from 89).
The entrance:
A youngish American chap owns it, and it's been there around about a year I reckon. He's changed the interior since first opening, adding a TV and some funky little tables and chairs:
Couple of chaps were working there. One resembled a surly taxi driver while the other looked like a slightly wayward M5 student, the lump of black plastic in his ear and bum fluff on his lip were the give aways. But he was smiley and patient. I filled in the order form and off he went behind the almost neck-high counter.
-'No meat?'
-'No thanks.'
I watched robi's favourite actor, Owen Wilson, roll around a mine-filled field while some Bosnians looked on cooly, and pondered why the place was empty.
Could it be the lack of wimin? Or that high-counter (can't observe any cooking being done) or perhaps the slightly hidden nature of the place?
Anyway, my food came, wrapped in foil in a basket. No cutlery, which doesn't really bother me, just sayin:
The guacamole, which is 49 baht extra, was pretty good, and provided a soothing coolness to the chili and refried beans. At one point the shoddily sealed opposite end gave way and a lot of the filling pooed out into me basket, but I scooped it all up like the animal I am, so no worries.
I wondered whether to order more....or go round the corner to the Muslim joint. I looked at the menu again and thought, this place has got a bit of the old Subway curse hanging over it, as in, even though it appears you've got a choice, ultimately it all tastes kinda the same.
To the Moosalim place!
Straight away I felt more comfortable, more cheered, more excited.
More welcome:
There was pride here, and laughter and general busyness:
Usually I order khao mok gai or neua and some mataba, but after that burrito, er.....mataba gai and some....some.... satay, yep, let's try something new:
Great as usual, but any better than the Mexican joint? No, but a nice atmos' and a warm welcome go a long way.
As does a cheaper price:
Muslim joint: 75 baht
Mexican: 193 baht (including a small bottle of water)

By the way, all the photos were taken using my new toy, a Nokia N82.
