There are so many things I love about Thailand, but restaurant service is not one of them. Why are Thais so poor when it comes to waiting tables?

They aren't trained.
Jesus is coming, open your mouth.
It ain't rocket science. It's not so much the mistakes that are made, but the indignant attitude that many have.
Hmm... There are plenty of places I go to where the service is great. I suppose it's just the general lack of common sense as we see it that hinders service. Face plays a part as well.

It's widely accepted to be a low-end job, so there's a resignation while doing it. Also, a general laid-back/lazy attitude prevails amongst, er, the bulk of the population. The final nail in the coffin is the inability, which stems from fear, to take the bull by the horns and get the falang to repeat any words that they didn't quite catch.
When Dear worked at Bumrungrad, the girl who was thought of the most highly by her fellow Thais, was a rictus-grinned, fake-lashed lass who would deal with any and all medical issues with a vacuousness that reminded me of the film 'The Stepford Wives'.
Dear, with an actual ability to listen and empathise, got the most customer comment cards.
We kept waiting
Still nothing changes
It's a shame
It's truly one of life's great mysteries, go with the flow.![]()

“Don’t believe them, don’t fear them, don’t ask
anything of them.”
From personal observation and indeed by talking to the staff at restaurants/foodshops I frequent, I find that patrons who the staff like are treated well, whilst those that they think are shit get treated like shit.
BTW these observations hold true not only for Thailand but also many western countries as well.
They are the greatest in good restaurants and five star hotels. It goes down from there. When you get an Isaan girl working for 2,500 a month plus a room how could you expect good service. Work from 7am to 11pm many a night. Common very very common especially in beach resorts that cater to the thrifty.![]()
Too long in Exile, too long not singing my song.
Too long like a rolling stone, Too long in exile
Too long in Exile, baby you just arent my friend.
Too long in Exile my friend, Baby you can never go home again.
Excuse me if I'm wrong .. but you don't happen to be American do you? They always seem to be the one's moaning about "service".
You're in a foreign country to hopefully have adventure and experience new sites ,sounds, life etc. Don't demand everything to be the same as "back home". Crickey mate! .. what a bloody trivial thing to complain about. Do they manage to get the food to the table eventually? .. if "yes" .. well good enough in my book.
Lighten up .. go with the flow .. stop moaning and get a life.

Don't take this personally, Geektwat, but go fuck yourself. I've lived in Thailand for 14 years. My wife is Thai. My kids are half Thai. I think that gives me the right to make personal observations about life in Thailand.
Please show me recent posts where Americans, or anyone, for that matter, have complained about restaurant service.
Thanks for clarifying that for me. I hadn't noticed that in the past 14 years. I see the light, now.

555! Thanks for the laugh! Of course I won't "take it personally" I never take it personally when someone instructs me to to "go fuck myself"
Oh my God! .. another "I've been here X amount of years" .. I've got a Thai wife" .. "I've got half Thai Kids" tosser. Who cares? The fact remains that you are a moaner. "Oh My .. I can't get good service" "Excuse me waiter, but there's a cockroach in my somtam" etc etc.
As for "recent posts" .. or for that matter "old posts" ... mate .. believe it or not .. there is a real world out there outside of "cyberland". Also .. I wasn't referring to "restaurant service" .. I was referring to "service" in general.
I'm speaking from real life experience in the "real" world. I've worked with many Americans and they DO seem to moan and groan more than anyone else.I suppose that's because in America with the $3 an hour wages and having to rely on "tips" to bolster the wages makes "service" a big and neccessary thing.
I guess from your reaction that my supposition that you were from the USA was right. I've also worked with many Americans that are "normal". There's one at my school now. He's "been here 20 years" .. "Thai wife" etc etc .. no kids though .. but he doesn't seem to think it gives him "the right" to be a whinger.
Anyway .. be a moaning whinger .. you have a "right" to be if you want to. Just dont use the lame old "Lived here x years, Thai wife" yawn as an excuse.
Thanks for the laugh .. you've made my day! .. right .. where was I? .. Oh .. that's right .. I have to fuck myself .. almost forgot! I hope I still respect myself in the morning.... mental note .. don't forget to call myself later in the day.
EDIT .. Please notice that nowhere in the above ramblings did I mention how long "I" have been here or my marital status. Doesn't really matter does it? Tosser!
