...Sukhumvit, soi 14. If it weren't for the margaritas, this place would have been a total disappointment. Four of us started with a pitcher of frozen margaritas and two orders of chips and guacamole. The drinks were wonderful and the chips crisp and not oily. The guacamole, however, was flavorless: chopped (not mashed) avocado with a bit of onion and garlic and a squeeze of lime on a bed of lettuce....bland. We tried adding salt, black pepper, and even hot sauce to spark some flavor...we finally gave up. Another pitcher of margaritas (B375) and we ordered. Friend Paco, a vegetarian, tried the roasted corn soup and a variety of salsa dips with more chips. Friend Rabanne had a taco salad (a tossed salad with slivers of beef served in a largish taco shell and topped with a dribble of sour cream). SD ordered a half-side of ribs and I ordered the chicken in margarita marinade topped with mole sauce. I also ordered the baked oyster starter to share with SD as I was curious about the taste.
Not one of us was impressed with our orders. The soup, according to Paco, lacked flavor while the salsa selection was even less interesting. Rabanne enjoyed her salad, but commented that while fresh, it was not particularly Mexican, aside from the taco shell. SD said the ribs tasted industrially vacuum-bagged after preparation in some distant location and reheated in the oven. His sides of grilled asparagus and spicy fries were also ordinary. The oysters were served glued to their shells with a pasty, viscous white sauce the ingredients of which escaped me. The chicken breast was not marinated at all and the mole sauce was more red beans than chocolate beans....a big disappointment.
The drinks waitress was efficient...making sure we had enough margaritas to soften the blow of mediocre meals. The waiter confused orders, delivered wrong orders to other tables, and repeatedly checked back with us to remind himself (it appeared) of what we had ordered.
For 4 people and two pitchers of margaritas: B2800. The decor is nice..no kitschy sombreros or other "Mexican" souvenirs...dark wood floors, pale blue walls, a few plants. The music, however, was Tijuana all the way, though not overly intrusive.
The owner (manager?) walked by a few times and inquired as to food and drink...we all nodded politely.
I would return for the margaritas and the ambience...not the food.
