new restaurant in sukhumvit soi 23

:chug: Found a new restaurant in soi 23 sukhumvit yesterday. Its called Mommas and is run by an English guy who decided he'd had enough of the teaching rat race. The food is excellent and and very very reasonably priced. The menu is quite extensive and the average price for a meal is 80bht. Traditional English fare is the theme. Portions are big and he has a happy hour where all beer is 49bht. (7pm-9pm). Its located on the right side of soi 23 about 150m past soi cowboy.
Check it out, you won't be dissapointed!

But has he sorted out a phone up takeaway service yet to people who went to the opening night and live 150m away?

I'll check it out this weekend! I suppose 'Traditional English fare' must include Fish-n-Chips, right?

    Cookie,
Can you tell this guy to get in touch with me because I'd like to do an article. There are not too many people that get out of teaching and open restaurants and I think it might be a good read. It'll also be very good publicity for him.

Can you also ask him to open the shop, as it's always closed when I walk past.

I'll wander past tonight at about 6.30.

I did go at about 11.30 this morning, but he was closed again (I like an early lunch).

    Added after 8 hours:

OK, I went in tonight and ordered a takeaway. If you live really close they'll deliver (that's handy).

They're not open at lunchtime yet, only evenings.

Any questions email Jono at mommas.kitchen@gmail.com or phone 02 261 4010.

(sorry if the email address is wrong, but it's from memory)

I went and ate here tonight with Marko.
We BOTH agreed that it was the best English food we'd ever had in Bangkok.

I took quite a few pictures and will put them with an article on the main site tomorrow.

    You're joking, right?

I'm not saying the food is bad (it's not - it's quite good), but it doesn't even get close to The Dubliner or Bull's Head. It's a lot cheaper than both of them though.

What did you have, I'm feeling peckish and I'm willing to test your claim out.

Don't get me wrong Marmite and I realise there's a beer empire to protect. I rate the Bull's Head (The Dubliner I've never been to) but the food here was as good and better, And the prices you just can't compare. I would say the prices at places like the Dubliner and the Londoner are DOUBLE what they are at Momma's.

We had a sample selection of lasagne, chili con carne, fish and chips, chicken and mushroom pie, minted peas, garlic bread, and bread and butter pudding - all washed down with copious amounts of beer at 49 baht a bottle.

The guy deserves support. He was once a teacher. Nuff said.

Oh we heard how you can't be arsed to walk up the soi and prefer delivery to your palatial mansion - you lazy git.

I wasn't at all thinking about the Empire, Phil.

The prices at the Bull's Head etc, are probably 3 or 4 times Mommas, but I will explain my thoughts.

The chips were a bit soggy. The chips at the Old Dutch are far better IMO.

I had a chicken curry which tasted fine, but I don't like bits of skin on the chicken and it was a bit anemic.

    The minted peas are great!.

I will say that he's probably the best value for money for western food and I will happily eat there (well, have it delivered) and give him as much support as I can possibly give.

I wonder if he wants any tea bags....

but it doesn't even get close to The Dubliner or Bull's Head
    I disagree...

These English style pubs in Bangkok (including the dreadful Londoner) are overpriced expat watering holes with minimal service and and even less friendliness.

I've been eating out in Bangkok for four years and 'Mommas' is the only place in town for me. The Lasagne is the best deal for 110 Baht and that's the most expensive thing on the menu.

If that skanky shit-pit The Offshore and the sub-standard pricey Big John popped into Momma's and took home what they learned there would be more places to go in Bangkok for hungry teachers and ex-pats who don't/can't cook at home.

I agree that some of the pubs do decent nosh, but for most of us I'd say that after letting go of about 800 Baht for a meal and two pints is just too much.

I can get the same thing in Momma's for less than a third.

OK - here's the deal about this new restaurant:

    Service - 100%
Jono (Pronounced John 'o'!) and his girlfriend and partner, Wanna, are terrific. His attention to detail and commitment and her English and service are second to none in Thailand.

Ambience - 95% It's small but comfortable. The music is in the background and is mainly oldies and some jazz thrown in. The air is cool and light. (Not blustery from fans or ice cold from the AC!) The decor is terrific. Cosy, intimate and CLEAN!

(I wish they had UBC for the footy, but maybe next year!)

Food - 95% My goodness - this place is the best deal in Thailand. They use real cutlery that doesn't fold up if you eat anything denser than mash. It's HOT. The portions are BIG! The chips are NOT frozen. It's VERY CHEAP! And to top it all off the food itself tastes fantastic.

It was a wonderful experience to taste British food like it tastes in Britain!

I promise you one thing - if you go here just once you'll never ever go back to the over priced shite that other so called 'Western' style cafes or restaraunts are slopping out.

This was my second trip and I'll be going in once or twice a week from now on. I'll also be recommending it to anyone that will listen.

If you're rich and like noisy impersonal bars that charge 180 Baht for a Guinness and 250 for a plate of manufactured supermarket food then don't change your habits.

If you want great food at a great price in superb intimate friendly surroundings then give this place a go.

    You'll be hooked.
If people don't see things my way then they are just plain stupid.
