I'm sure their bodies have developed antibodies and tolerances for foods I can't stomach. But my digestive system isn't nearly as fit as it once was - getting old.

I ate it when I was a kid, but I never was a fan of 'hardcore' jewish foods like white fish, sour cream and herring, etc. I can't even eat cream cheese any more.

the problem isn't deep frying per se IMO. it's that there are very few street carts who fry hot enough to keep deep fried food from being greasy. if you deep fry well it's beauteous. if not, night mare-ish.
    Imodium can't stop me.

So seriously, is Bangkok safe to travel as an American who will teach there? I mean, I would be teaching there but would I expect to get jumped or pick-pocketed?

...seriously? No...However, if you're a heavy drinker and enjoy rowdy bar scenes, you're likely to have all sorts of adventures...

i've lived in Bangkok for 7 years, and never been jumped or pick-pocketed... but maybe i'm just lucky; i lived in NYC for 13 years and was never jumped or pick-pocketed.

Bingo! That and using slightly spoiled meats whose character can be concealed with deep-frying, or whatever passes for deep frying on a Bkk street.

It annoys me when they see you waiting and they assume the farang is in a hurry so they don't allow the oil to get hot enough and your food is a potential salmonella fest

I'm good at detecting the smell of bad meet being cooked in any way, but most of all the deep frying smell is a giveaway. Smell that deep fried chicken they sell
When I was in America a guy told me to 'have a nice day' but I didn't, so I sued him

The smell is revolting. And I had coughing as I walk through a cloud of vaporized oil.

Best street food in bkk isn't Thai. One word: shawarma.
